The iconic Ambassadeur Hotel in Nairobi is one of the most prominent landmark buildings in the country. Whether you are in the upcountry or in Nairobi, chances are high you have heard of it.

Located next to Kencom Buildings and a few meters aways from the National Archives, Ambassadeur Hotel was established in 1961 by former Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament John Ngata Kariuki and late billionaire businessman Gurcharan Singh Vohra. It was later acquired by businessman Samuel Maina in 2004.

The iconic hotel was a fan-favourite and patronised by politicians, businessmen, and travellers from across the East African Community.

Hotel Ambassadeur. / Courtesy

However, as years went by, the iconic hotel lost part of its appeal due to the establishment of a bus stage next to the building, turning the area into a beehive of activities.

Due to its central location within the CBD and ample parking space, the hotel’s entrance soon became synonymous with members of the public waiting to board buses home.

The building’s front also offered shelter to members of the public when it rained and buses would come to pick passengers from there. As a result, the hotel slowly established itself as a popular bus stage for Kenyans.

However, the hotel still remains an ideal destination for persons looking for quality affordable dining and accommodation experiences within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

Hotel Ambassadeur. / Courtesy

Ambassadeur Hotel boasts 94 well-appointed rooms, multiple conference rooms accommodating 10 to 150 people, and ample parking space for over 30 vehicles.

Patrons of the hotel are offered complimentary services such as free breakfast buffet as well as dry cleaning and laundry services. It also offers a variety of African cuisines to its guests.

The 3-star facility boasts a range of guest rooms, each equipped with bathrooms featuring separate showers, hot water facilities, and complimentary toiletries.

These rooms which include deluxe rooms for singles and triple rooms complete with private balconies and kitchenettes offer choice to clients from different social classes.

The rooms come with a personal computer, a sofa set, a writing table, and ironing equipment.

Members of the public thronged the streets armed with Kenyan flags, water, and placards, declaring their displeasure at the additional oppressive taxes contained in the finance bill.

Angered by a majority vote at the National Assembly to pass the bill, Kenyans resorted to countrywide protests to air their discontent. Public and private properties were damaged in the process.

Among properties vandalised by irate Kenyans include the homes and businesses of some of the legislators who voted in favour of the bill.

MP Kuria Kimani – rural home in Molo

National Assembly Finance Committee Chair Kuria Kimani’s rural home in Molo, Nakuru County was set on fire by his constituents. The angry mob descended on his home after parliament voted to adopt the bill.

The residence was vandalised and properties of unknown value were looted. The irate protestors also set on fire three cars that were parked inside the MP’s compound.

The protestors also looted 10,000 chicken from Kuria Kimani’s farm.

Club Timba XO – Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi

Eldoret-based Club Timba Xo has made the headlines over the recent days for various reasons. The newly-launched entertainment spot associated with Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has been the talk of town

Timba Xo was among the private properties vandalised by Kenyans immediately after the MPs voted to adopt amendments by the National Assembly Finance Committee and pass the Finance Bill.

Kenyans mobbed the building, damaging the glass-walled exterior, while others managed to breach the perimeter wall and loot the premises.

National Assembly Majority Leader, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah’ – office in Kikuyu

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah’s office in Kikuyu was vandalised, and properties of unknown value looted before the premises were set ablaze by angry members of the public.

Anonymous is an international activist group primarily famed for various cyberattacks against governments, government agencies, and independent corporations. Over the years, the hacktivist group has championed for fairness while exposing corruption and scandalous activities in several organisations.

On Thursday, June 2024, Anonymous cautioned President William Ruto and his administration against violating the rights of Kenyans during the anti-Finance Bill #OccupyParliament protests.

In the one-minute video, the hackers asked the Head of State to respect the rights of Kenyans to picket and protest, threatening serious consequences should the government fail on its part.

“Greetings citizens of the world. This is a warning message to William Ruto, the Kenyan government and all members of parliament from Anonymous. It has come to our attention that there are discussions in parliament to pass the Finance Bill, which will unfairly tax the citizens of Kenya.

AI generated image of anonymous Hacker Group.

“Kenyans attempting peaceful demonstrations are being unfairly harassed, arrested, and shot at using live bullets by police force on your command,” the hacker group stated.

Anonymous noted that its aware of the leaked mobile phone numbers of Kenyan lawmakers, warning that more information may soon be leaked should the government fail to listen to the people.

“Soon, there will be an uprising of hackers, many of whom may reside in your home country. Your secrets may no longer be safe, and there is a chance that allow these secrets will be exposed to show how corrupt and unjust members of this parliament are, embezzling public funds for personal gain,” they said.

History

The Anonymous group has been around since the early 2000s, originating from the chaotic and often irreverent forums of 4chan. Initially, their activities were more about self-amusement, trolling, and cyberbullying.

However, two significant events in 2007 shifted their focus: the Church of Scientology’s attempt to remove a video featuring Tom Cruise from YouTube and a Canadian Security Intelligence Service agent’s approach to a leading member of Anonymous about working for Canadian law enforcement to disrupt online spaces of terrorist groups.

In response to the Church of Scientology’s actions, Anonymous launched a campaign against the organisation, flooding its website with traffic, linking the term “Church of Scientology” with “dangerous cult” on Google, and sending the church “black faxes” meant to cause fax machines to run out of toner or shut down. This marked a turning point for Anonymous, as they focused more on social activism and hacktivism.

In the following years, Anonymous conducted numerous operations targeting various organisations and causes. Some notable actions include:

– Operation Payback (2010): In retaliation for the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America hiring Indian software firm AIPLEX to launch DDoS attacks on The Pirate Bay and other file-sharing websites, Anonymous launched their attacks against these organisations.

– Operation Darknet (2011): Anonymous took down Lolita City, a website that enabled paedophiles to view innocent children being abused, and published the names of 1,500 people who used the website.

– Operation Tunisia (2011): During the Arab Spring, Anonymous provided crucial logistics to protest movements in Tunisia and other Arab nations, helping to spread the uprisings and support the fight for democracy.

– Operation Free Korea (2013): Anonymous declared cyber war on North Korea, aiming to disrupt the authoritarian regime’s satellite communications and demoralise its leadership.

The most successful and relevant operation has been #opDeathEaters, which preceded Operation Gabon. This operation is considered the culmination of all previous Anonymous operations, focusing on exposing and combating corruption, abuse, and human rights violations worldwide.

Abraham Lazarus Block, born in 1883 to Samwel and Ettel Block is among the founding fathers of Nairobi’s rich architectural heritage. He arrived in Kenya in 1903 and went ahead to establish an empire that stands firm to date.

The Lithuanian Jew’s business empire once comprised high-end hospitality facilities in the country such as the Stanley and Nairobi’s Norfork hotels, and food manufacturers Farmers Choice and East African Industries.

Just like many jews at the time, Abraham fled his home country of Lithuania for England. He worked as a parcel delivery boy to earn a living.

He was an ambitious fellow and he felt his job could take him nowhere, neither could he save enough money to marry the girl of his dreams, Rosie Daniels.

File image of Abraham Lazarus Block. |Courtesy| Europeans in East Africa|

Abraham’s father had fled to South Africa and he decided to join him. To pay for his travel cost, he worked in the ship’s engine room. The year was 1901, when he was just 18 years old.

After reuniting with his father and even fighting in the anglo-boar war, Abraham intended to buy land in South Africa but a statement from a friend – Eli Levy – made him consider relocating to Kenya.

Kenya had been described as a new Zionist colony that would solve the Jewish problem.

Abraham Lazarus Blockattended a meeting in Cape Town where British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain narrated his visit to Kenya, painting a picture of zion to Jewish Youth seeking a place to settle.

He boarded a German ship and docked in Mombasa. In his possession were a Basuto ponies, 20 pounds savings, a gold watch from his father, and a bag with his other personal belongings.

New Challenge

When Abraham arrived in Nairobi, everything was at all easy. Racism existed and some Europeans were opposed to the Jewish. Lands Commissions officers worked whenever they felt like it and did not have a clear understanding of the country’s interior.

The British colonial government was also not willing to support all white settlers.

Despite the mosquito-infested swamp that Nairobi was, Abraham Lazarus Block and his newly found British friend Tommy Woods were determined to succeed.

Breakthrough

One morning Abraham was having breakfast at Tommy’s Victoria Hotel when he overhead that there was prime land for sale in Parklands. He approached the seller Mr Jeevanjee and agreed on a price of 75 pounds.

He made a downpayment of 20 pounds, all the money he had and went after the young men who he had overheard discussing the land and sold it to them for 100 pounds. He made a profit of 25 pounds.

With time, Abraham would earn the nickname, ‘the prophet’ because of his ability to make money.

At one time Stanley Hotel owner Mayence Bent wanted mattresses and Abraham swooped in for the deal. Funny enough, he did not know where to get the mattresses.

He sought mattress covers and hired unemployed Africans to cut the grass that grew along the railway, stuffed the mattress covers and sewed them. He then supplied them to Stanley.

When Mayence Bent retired, she sold Stanley Hotel to Abraham Lazarus Block.

In 1908, he made yet another audacious deal by going into Uganda and importing 200 long-horned Ankole cows.

Prior to Uganda, he had began trading cattle with the Maasai and with the help of Lord Delamere, Abraham opened Victoria Butchery in Nairobi.

After World War I, Abraham ventured into Dairy farming, selling furniture, real estate, tourism, hotel industry, and supplying products to big game hunting and safari teams.

Abraham would soon be the proprietor and owner of Block hotels, East Africa industries, and Block Estates. His company managed Nyali Beach Hotel, Lake Baringo Hotel, Lake Naivasha Country Club, Keekorock Lodge, Samburu Lodge, Outspan and Treetops Hotel.

Other Business Interests

Abraham Lazarus Block owned vast land in Rift Valley and Nairobi through Block Estates. He also owned Afro-Swiss Engineering and Business Machines Limited.

He later bought the 640-acre Njuna Farm in Kiambu County and invited his father and sister from Johannesburg. The extra set of hands helped get the work done around the farm.

Marriage

Abraham’s first love Rosie Daniels chose the life in Leeds. His second choice Rachel could not be married until her elder sister Sarah was married. So, Abraham married Sarah.

File image of Abraham Lazarus Block and his wife Sarah. |Courtesy| Europeans in East Africa|

Sarah and Abraham had four children; Rita (born 1915), Jack (1916), Eddie (1919), and Ruth (1927).

Abraham retired in 1958 and left the businesses to his children. He died on April 18, 1965. Sarah died 15 years later on the eve of Christmas 1980. She lived at a cottage at the Norfolk Hotel.

Memoir

The book Abraham’s People written by Jane Clare Barsby details the life of Abraham Lazarus Block by interviewing history, biography, and fiction.

The book can be found at Text Book Centre, book Stop, Bana Box, The Souk (Karen), and Safari Kit (Fairview Hotel).

Nestled in the heart of Westlands, Milan Club is among the most exclusive luxury and entertainment spots in Nairobi. This high-end establishment is owned by betting firm Sportpesa owner – Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri.

Milan Club is located inside Mirage Tower 3 off Waiyaki Way and offers an unforgettable clubbing experience that seamlessly blends sophistication with vibrant energy.

The establishment Milan rolls the needs of revellers into one place, featuring a restaurant, indoor and outdoor lounges, and a bar with a modern interior.

Club Milan. |Courtesy| Capital Lifestyle|

With a wide selection of alcoholic drinks and sumptuous food options, including chicken wings and beef skewers, Milan is a top choice for a night out within the capital. It’s among the most sought-after clubs in Nairobi and an integral part of Westland’s nightlife.

With its exquisite interior design, state-of-the-art sound system, and a host of top-tier Kenyan DJs, Milan is a destination for those who seek opulence and excitement under one roof.

Milan bridges the gap between Latin and African cultures by playing a blend of salsa, kizomba, hip-hop, reggaeton, and R&B. However; some nights take partiers down memory lane with ‘90s and early noughties music. Milan’s arms are always open to anyone eager to dress up and have a blast.

The high-end Nairobi club goes all out with its wild nights; all you have to do is to dress the part.

According to reports, the cheapest white wine at the establishment costs Ksh3,500.

At Milan Club, revellers are required to spend a minimum amount of money on drinks before they are allowed to access other parts of the menu.

Club Milan. |Courtesy| Capital Lifestyle|

Drama

In 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s son Muhoho Kenyatta caused a scene at the club after he used police officers to push other revellers out of the club’s VIP Lounge. This elicited public outrage.

Controversies

In November 2023, Club Milan was on the spot after reports emerged online that a section of employees were being mistreated by management.

In the damning messages shared with bloggers and media houses in a bid to expose the rot, some employees alleged poor pay and delay of wages. They also claimed that management was shortchanging them on tips left by patrons.

Additionally, security personnel at the club were accused of blackmailing waitresses into having sex with them, failure to which they would ensure their sacking.

Boycotts

On June 20, 2024, Kenyans across social media platforms called for a boycott of businesses associated with Karauri after he voted in favour of the Finance Bill 2024.

Real Estate Investment

According to Makamba, the Tanzania Twin Towers, containing residences and offices, and adding beauty to the Nairobi skyline, will not only earn the Tanzanian government much needed foreign currency but will also save government rental expenses for the chancery and embassy staff housing.

“We are delighted that NSSF management, investment committee and the whole board have found this investment profitable,” Makamba stated.

The government of Tanzania owns about 101 buildings and plots around the world, most of them in prime areas in major capitals including 11 buildings and plots in Lusaka alone.

In the new strategy, Tanzania seeks to use professional and world-class real estate entities to develop these assets to earn income and uplift the quality of its embassies and embassy staff housing.

“At the moment, the government is spending about TZS 29 billion per annum as rental for embassy offices and embassy staff housing. In the new plan, the government will instead earn about TZS 36 billion per year from these investments,” Makamba stated.

The first phase will be Nairobi, Kigali, Kinshasa, London, New York and Lusaka.

Kasmuel McOure is a music educator, award-winning Pianist, and founder of the Maskani Big Band and the KasKazini Orkestra. Known for his artistic displays on TikTok and other social media platforms, he has curved out a name for himself as a talented content creator and human rights activist.

McOure hit the headlines on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, as he joined Kenyans from various wakes of life to protest against the proposed Finance Bill 2024.

Dressed in a black suit, armed with a flute, handkerchief and water, Kasmuel was well equipped to handle the teargas lodged at protestors as they walked through Nairobi Streets, airing their economic grievances, and chanting anti-government and anti-Finance Bill 2024 slogans.

File image of Kasmuel McOure. |Courtesy| X|

His views on the contentious bill and bravery in coming out to picket for his constitutional rights and those of millions of Kenyans have endeared him as a fan favourite among members of the public. Kenyans took to social media platforms to commend him for the efforts, terming him an epitome of civic awareness among Kenyan youth.

Whereas many may now know him for his civic heroics, little is known about the struggles he has undergone in life to be where he is today.

Suicide & Social castigation

In a detailed message shared on X, Kasmuel McOure revealed that he is not afraid to die in the name of justice and equality in society. This is after a section of Kenyans stated that he had gained popularity as one of the key figures in the anti-government protests and thus may become a marked man.

He rebuffed the claims, stating that he survived suicide and is not afraid to die fighting for what he believes in.

“To everyone telling me NOT to go for protests on Thursday because I’ve been marked and might be killed, do you know that I was found on our rooftop on Friday night in a noose ready to die? Kama si majirani singekuwa hapa leo (if it were not for my neighbours I wouldn’t be here today),” he revealed.

“Siogopi kifo guys!!!” He declared.

File image of Kasmuel McOure. |Courtesy| X|

McOure further revealed that he had been threatened and called names by many during the Fungua Nchi protests in 2020 and the anti-Femicide campaign early this year.

“I’ve been told, “You know if you disappeared nobody would miss you?” During the femicide march I was body shamed and called gay huko NGC. Siogopi bana,” he stated.

Despite battling mental health issues, Kasmuel McOure finds a way to continue amplifying what he believes is social justice for all Kenyans.

Activism

Activism is hard, Kasmuel McOure notes. He revealed that people have been blowing up his phone some not to support him but just because they saw him on TV or trending on social media.

He reiterated that he is not in it for the fame, but rather to fight for a just cause, one he believes will only take effect if Kenyans unite and call out government on poor policies.

“I’m also not doing this for clout. There’s no joy in being cancelled by potential clients. It’s no fun having your friends joke about things you’re most passionate about. Activism is a difficult thing. The state is out to get you, so are the people around you,” Kasmuel said.

“Hii kitu ni ngumu. Nikimaliza, naenda hospitali, because I’m struggling mentally. Then nijaribu kufanya muziki. There’s nothing fun about activism,” he added.

File image of Kasmuel McOure. |Courtesy| Fidel Tall/X|

Rallying Call

Despite the dangers of walking down the activism path, Kasmuel McOure calls upon fellow Kenyans to join the march for proper representation and governance.

“To anyone reading this, do it anyway. It’ll be hard, but we have ensamples in the men who’ve gone before us! We remain UNBOWED!!! Sitasimama maovu yakitawala. Viva Gen-Z viva!!!” He rallied.

President William Ruto unveiled the Usahihi Nairobi to Mombasa Expressway, during his visit with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, while visiting the White House on Thursday May 23, 2024. The project will be undertaken by Everstrong Capital.

The Usahihi Expressway will be the largest toll road project in Africa and envisions a transformative symbol of Kenya’s dedication to transparent and innovative infrastructure development, serving as a testament to the strengthened partnership between the United States and Kenya.

Everstrong Capital signed the Project Development Agreement (PDA) with Kenya Highways Authority (KeNHA), authorizing the full development rights to Everstrong Capital and its partners.

Ownership and Management

Everstrong Capital is a US-owned infrastructure investment manager with a presence in both the US and Kenya. It was founded by Philip Dyk. He currently serves as the Managing Partner at Everstrong Capital and is a partner at the Usahihi Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway.

Former US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter is a partner at Everstrong Capital and is the Chairman of the Usahihi Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway. Henry Kyanda is the Managing Director Everstrong Kenya Infrastructure Fund.

Usahihi Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway

Usahihi Expresway will pay for itself, not burdening the Government of Kenya. It is structured as a Public Private Partnership with revenue coming from road users.

Usahihi will organize finance, construction, tolling, operation, and maintenance of the expressway under a 30-year concession with construction lasting 3-4 years.

The Usahihi expressway has garnered significant attention from an array of lenders and investors. The investment of USD 3.6 billion will be led by American Development Finance Institutions and significant investments from Kenyan private sector investors and pension funds.

The new 4-6 lane dual carriage 440 km safe and efficient climate-sensitive road will create a wealth corridor between Kenya’s two largest cities.

The contractor noted that motorists will notice reduced fuel consumption following the completion of the toll road.

“Currently, this road is two lanes, winding and very dangerous. With the creation of the new modern dual carriage expressway, the current 10-hour journey between Nairobi and Mombasa will be shortened to approximately four hours and 30 minutes,” the contractor stated.

This will be achieved by strategic installation of toll stations along the road.

The toll stations will be powered by solar power.

Everstrong Capital also announced that it will install electric charging points along the road to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles in the country.

“The installation of electric vehicle charging stations will encourage the use of electric buses and other eco-friendly vehicles on the toll road, contributing to a greener transport system.

“Specially designed animal crossings, developed in consultation with wildlife agencies, will safeguard local fauna and preserve the natural environment,” the US company stated.

The contractor also noted that a tree line will be planted along the roads to reduce noise pollution for Kenyans living close to the road.

“Everstrong Capital distinguishes itself by offering to construct, finance, and operate the Usahihi Expressway, a state-of-the-art dual carriage four-six lane expressway, without imposing risks on the Kenyan government. This project is removed from Kenya’s balance sheet and is designed to pay for itself, representing a wealth corridor opportunity,” the company added.

The expressway is engineered to accommodate the safe passage of trucks, buses, and automobiles, featuring rest stops, wildlife observation points, electric vehicle charging infrastructure powered by renewable energy sources, and strategically located overpasses designed by environmental experts based on animal migration patterns to facilitate safe wildlife migration.

Usahihi, which translates to “Done Correctly” in Swahili, envisions a transformative symbol showcasing Kenya’s dedication to transparent and innovative infrastructure development.

The Usahihi expressway is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The TVET training program offers technical training to communities in every county along its route and contributes to skill development, enterprise growth, and economic expansion.

The Usahihi expressway promises substantial time and cost benefits for its users by bringing the current 10.5-hour journey between Nairobi and Mombasa, known as one of Africa’s most dangerous routes for both people and wildlife, down to a safe journey of approximately 4.5 hours.

This project will establish an economic bridge by facilitating the secure, efficient, and comfortable movement of people and goods throughout the East African region, fostering regional connectivity and enhancing economic opportunities.
