Top performing students are thought to have it easy in the Kenyan job market. Bill Clinton Muguai, a top performing student, found the reality to be different.
He scored straight As in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and a First Class honors Engineering graduate at the University of Nairobi.
For two years, he has been tamacking looking for a job or even an internship position in vain. He reached a point where he wanted to burn his degree certificate.
The 25 year old who lives in Kabaru location in Nyeri county with his mother shared his frustration at applying for jobs which are not forthcoming.
“After applying like a month ago I got a rejection”, he told Citizen TV in a 2022 interview.
“So I was like ‘why should I apply for jobs anymore”, he visibly frustrated Muguai shared.
Muigai had always been a top student at St Mary Boys Secondary School where he scored A in the 2015 KCSE exams.
He joined the University of Nairobi and it was a struggle getting through. “….I was falling into depression especially in my third and fourth year but thanks to God I finished successful”, he said.
His mother shared how it was tough educating her son given that she was a single mother of limited means.
“Educating my son was not a small task. You can imagine a single mother like me with no job and small land” an emotive Muigai’s mother opined.
Muigai said he started applying for jobs in 2020 before he did the final exams.
“.. I applied to many places as you would expect. I actually started applying at the end of 2020 before I did the final exams.
Bill Clinton Muguai was rejected multiple times and even getting an internship was a problem forcing him to retreat to the village.
