Evanson Kagia: Mombasa Mechanic Who Rose To Establish High-End Garage In The US

Evanson Kagia is the founder of N&K Auto Repair Shop in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.

Following his relocation to the US, he was employed twice before he pooled resources and set up his own business.

Other than running a garage, he also sells used and new car tyres.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Before his relocation to the United States, Kagia who hails from Limuru, Kiambu County, worked as a mechanic in Kenya.

In an interview with Kikuyu Diaspora Media, he noted that after settling in the US, he was encouraged to start a garage.

Kagia worked two different jobs before he finally set up his own business.

“When most people get to America, their goal is to study medicine, nursing, and other courses. But when I got here, I got hired to two jobs before I opened this shop

“In Kenya, I used to work as a mechanic in Mombasa. When I came here my friends helped me get started and it is a good job since people also need mechanics in the US,” he explained.

Kagia established N & K Auto Repair Shop L.L.C in Birmingham, Alabama, offering Automotive Repair Services.

He also sells spare parts such as used and new car tyres.

The garage operates from Monday to Saturday between 8 am and 5 pm.

“I have customers not only from Kenyans in America but China as well. I have customers whose vehicles I have worked on for close to a decade,” Kagia said.

Kagia also explained that challenges he experienced in his business includes clients who can’t distinguish different car parts.

“One day you can fix the starter then hear complaints from the mechanic that the car is not working, turns out the battery is damaged,” he stated.
