The Kenyan Judiciary is one of the arms of the government that ensures that laws are implemented and followed to the latter. While the judiciary is male dominated, the likes of Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu are changing this narrative. She is an associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the highest court on Kenyan land. She is a role model to a generation of young girls who wish to follow in her footsteps. This article looks at the biography of the Honorable Justice Njoki Ndungu. 

Age and Place of Birth

She is 56 years old. Justice Ndungu was born on 20th, September 1965. 

Education Background

Justice Ndungu is a highly educated and brilliant legal practitioner who has received academic qualifications from top universities in the country and abroad. She attended high school in the prestigious Kenya High and was later admitted to the University of Nairobi to pursue a career in Law. She graduated and signed up for a graduate degree, Master of Law in the University of Leicester in Britain.

Additionally, the justice attained a diploma from Austria in Women’s Human Rights and pursued a secretarial course before campus at the Valley Secretarial College in Nairobi. 

Career Journey

Hon. Njoki Ndungu’s successful career kicked off in 1989, as state counsel having early exposure to the processes and procedures in the office of the Attorney General. She has also worked as a program officer and with the UNHCR as protection officer before she went into politics. Her political journey began in political analysis for the now African Union party, then was later nominated to be member of parliament under National Rainbow Coalition. 

Her tenure in Parliament was particularly successful as she used the platform to serve in several parliamentary committees and move numerous private member bills that had real and lasting impact on the Kenyan people. She is accredited for moving and later had the Sexual Offences Act of 2006 passed as law. This Act was a milestone in the protection of women’s rights and with this, she was awarded several titles and honors such as the “UN Person of the Year” in 2006, along with local honors – “Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS)” and “Chief of the Burning Spear (CBS)”. 

She was also notably a member of the Committee of Experts which drafted Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. As at December 2020, Hon. Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu has been an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya since 2012.

Personal Life

Hon. Njoki Ndungu is a mother of one child aged seven. She recently lost her mother, Mama Victoria Mercy Nyaithiru who was battling cancer in the United States of America. The president, Uhuru Kenyatta, led the country in mourning the loss and celebrating the deceased and her great work in raising children who have made tremendous contributions to the country.
