Emma Miloyo and her husband, Chris Nicca, are the proud founders and owners of the prestigious Kiota School. The institution has 3 branches: Karen, Kasuku, and Dennis Pritt.

It provides an integrated curriculum that combines the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) with elements from Montessori, the British National Curriculum, the International Baccalaureate, and the American System.

From campus schoolmates to founding the Kiota school, this is their journey as told by WOK:

Humble beginnings

Chris and Emma’s journey began at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, where both were pursuing degrees in architecture. During their sixth year, students were required to submit a thesis; failure to which they would have had to repeat the whole year.

It so happened that the submission deadline was fast approaching, but Emma had not submitted her thesis. She did not even have a topic, and so she approached Chris for ideas.

“I remember she came to see me and asked me, What do we do? What can I submit?” he recounted in an interview. “And since we were tight on time, I told her, how about if we play on the thesis topic that I have submitted, but you submit and study the same area, but in your area of interest?”

And that was how Emma, who was at the time a part-time teacher at Riara School, ended up submitting a thesis about educational spaces and how their architecture could support the well-being of children, while Chris’s thesis was about the design of correctional facilities.

On graduation day, the couple joked that since both their theses revolved around educational architecture, they were destined to start a school one day. That was the genesis of Kiota School.

From Idea to Institution

A decade later, that joke became a reality. They spotted an advert for someone selling a school property and decided to buy it. The name “Kiota” means “nest” in Swahili, symbolizing a safe place where children grow wings to fly.

From the outset, the vision for Kiota was to be more than just a school. The founders aimed to “impact the community,” believing that by doing so, they could impact society and, ultimately, the nation.

To realize this vision, Chris and Emma brought on their friends, Paul and Judy, who shared their mindset and commitment to the school’s mission. “We are four directors at Kiota: me, Emma, Paul, and Judy,” said Chris.

From the get-go, they decided that Kiota would be a Christian institution, guided by Biblical principles. Today, the school has 3 branches: Karen, Kasuku, and Dennis Pritt.

Speaking about the journey of starting and running a school, Chris credits God and hard work for most of their achievements, saying that one of his most memorable moments is when the school opened its third branch, Kasuku Campus, which is located in Kilimani.

“The Kasuku campus is crazy because there was a time we did not sleep for three, four days after we took over the property, I remember it was on December 11th, and we had to have a school by the next month on January 7th,” Chris recounted. “So, you can imagine how hard we had to work to turn it around and make sure our children can come in.”

That year, none of the directors celebrated Christmas or the subsequent New Year’s holiday. Everyone was busy trying to ensure the school was up and running, ready to start admitting students for the next year’s first term.

Passion Meets Purpose

On her part, Emma shared that the transition from architecture to education was a natural one for her, rooted in a long-held passion. “Education and children are something I’ve always been passionate about,” she said in an interview.

She added that part of the inspiration was born out of spotting a business gap brought about by the need to blend the best of international curricula with a strong Kenyan identity.

Emma considers running a business with her husband a blessing. She believes family businesses are strong, citing trust as a major advantage. “A lot of family-owned businesses struggle with trust,” she explained. “But for us, that’s not an issue. We already know what our individual strengths and struggles are, and that really helps,” the Kenya High alumnus explained.

Aside from co-founding Kiota, Emma holds the distinction of being the first woman to clinch a first-class honors degree in architecture from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. In 2017, she also made history after becoming the first female president of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK).

To the woman looking to start her own venture, she offers a simple, powerful formula: “The most fundamental formula to creating a successful business is solving a problem that’s needed by society.”

She encourages entrepreneurs to look beyond money and consider their impact on the world. “If you have that mindset, the rest sort of falls into place… Go at it. You’ve got it. It’s been done before by many others… You will hack it. So go for it.”

Colonel (Retired) James Gitahi Nguyo was a towering figure in Kenyan aviation, a man whose life was defined by a remarkable journey from humble beginnings to the cockpits of presidential jets and commercial aircraft.

A veteran pilot with over four decades of experience, Gitahi’s career was marked by unparalleled dedication, skill, and an unwavering commitment to serving his country.

Known for flying two of Kenya’s most iconic leaders—former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki—his legacy is one of precision, professionalism, and profound influence on the aviation industry.

Tragically, his life came to an abrupt end on March 5, 2025, in a devastating road accident, leaving behind a nation in mourning and a story worth celebrating.

Early life

Gitahi was born in a modest village in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, into a family with no prior connection to aviation.

Growing up in a rural setting, the young Gitahi had little exposure to the world of flight beyond the occasional sight of an airplane streaking across the sky.

However, a pivotal moment came when he saw an aircraft up close at a local airstrip—an encounter that ignited a passion he would pursue relentlessly.

Financial constraints and limited resources posed significant barriers, but fate intervened when Gitahi stumbled upon an advertisement for recruitment into the Kenya Air Force (KAF).

Seizing the opportunity, he applied and was accepted, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.

“The first time I got near a plane was at the KAF training college. Learning to fly a plane requires a lot of resources, which my family could not afford,” he recalled.

Military career

Gitahi’s aviation training was rigorous and comprehensive, reflecting the high standards of the Kenya Air Force.

He honed his skills at the Moi Airbase in Kenya and later pursued advanced training in prestigious institutions, including those in the United States and the Pakistan Air Force Academy.

His dedication and natural aptitude saw him rise steadily through the ranks, eventually earning him a place in the elite VIP Squadron.

In 1984, Gitahi began his tenure as a co-pilot under Colonel (Retired) Hussein Farah, who flew then-President Daniel arap Moi.

This apprenticeship was a formative period, exposing him to the immense responsibility of transporting the Head of State.

When Farah retired in 1992, Gitahi took over the reins, becoming Moi’s primary fixed-wing pilot—a role he would hold for 17 years until Moi’s retirement in 2002.

His first flight with Moi, as a co-pilot, was a nerve-wracking experience, but Moi’s approachable demeanor put him at ease.

“He was in Kisumu, and it was a night flight. He trusted us, and that made the job easier,” he recalled.

Gitahi’s service extended beyond Moi’s tenure. From 2002 to 2010, he piloted President Mwai Kibaki, accumulating over 220 presidential flights across his career.

“While flying the president, together with my co-pilot, I had to bear in mind that we were holding the fate of the country in the air,” he said.

Throughout his 32 years in the military, Gitahi logged over 19,000 flight hours, a testament to his skill and endurance.

Flying two Presidents

One of the most fascinating aspects of Gitahi’s career was his unique perspective on the personalities of the two presidents he served.

In interviews, he often contrasted Moi’s outgoing nature with Kibaki’s reserved demeanor.

“President Moi was more lively. He was happy to watch wildlife movies or Vitimbi comedies on board and would laugh heartily. He’d come to the cockpit, ask where we were, and show a keen interest in what we were doing,” he said.

Moi’s generosity also left an impression—after flights, he would offer tokens of appreciation, such as money to share with the crew or provisions like a bull for Christmas celebrations at Moi Airbase.

Kibaki, on the other hand, was a man of few words.

“He was a quiet man, basically he used to read a lot of magazines and newspapers,” he said.

To accommodate Kibaki’s habits, Gitahi ensured the aircraft—known locally as Harambee One and internationally as Air Force One—was stocked with reading material.

Despite their differences, both leaders entrusted Gitahi with their safety, a responsibility he carried with pride and precision.

A standout achievement was Gitahi’s role in bringing Kenya’s presidential jet, the Fokker 70 Extended Range (ER), into the country.

“The presidential jet that we have today, I am the one who brought it from Holland,” he revealed.

Transition to civilian life

After retiring from the Kenya Air Force in 2010, Gitahi did not hang up his wings.

Instead, he transitioned into commercial aviation, joining Bluebird Aviation—a company founded by his mentor, Colonel Hussein Farah.

As chief pilot, Gitahi spent 12 years flying commercial fixed-wing aircraft out of Wilson Airport in Nairobi, mentoring a new generation of aviators and ensuring the skies remained safe.

His final flight with Bluebird on May 19, 2023, was a poignant moment—a 30-minute journey to Masinga Dam and back, accompanied by his wife, Senator Betty Batuli Montet, and other passengers.

The landing was met with a water salute, a fitting tribute to a career spanning 44 years.

Gitahi’s influence extended beyond flying.

He expressed a desire to continue contributing to aviation through simulators and training, emphasizing the importance of hard work and passion.

“If you don’t have passion for this job, don’t expect good results,” he advised aspiring pilots.

Personal life

Behind the aviator’s uniform was a devoted family man.

Gitahi met Betty Batuli Montet in 1982 while she was a student at the Government Secretarial College and he was a lieutenant in the KAF.

Their romance blossomed quickly, leading to a marriage that lasted 41 years.

Together, they raised two children, a daughter, now a lawyer with two children of her own, and a son who followed in his father’s footsteps as a pilot, working in Somalia and married to another pilot.

Montet, a nominated senator with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), often spoke of the challenges and joys of being a military wife, crediting their close friends for support during Gitahi’s frequent absences.

Death

On Wednesday, March 5, Gitahi’s illustrious journey came to a heartbreaking close.

Driving alone on the Mombasa Highway, his vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming lorry at Kyumvi Junction in Machakos County.

Witnesses reported that he was overtaking another truck when he misjudged the distance, leading to a catastrophic crash that caused his car to burst into flames.

The veteran pilot, whose body was burned beyond recognition, perished at the scene, leaving a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the nation.

McCarthy was born on November 12, 1977, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Raised in Hanover Park, a township on the Cape Flats known for its socio-economic struggles and gang activity, McCarthy’s early life was shaped by adversity.

The son of Dudley and Dora McCarthy, he grew up in a football-loving family with two brothers and a sister.

His older brother, Jerome, played professionally for clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, while his younger brother, Mark, pursued football in the United States.

McCarthy’s talent emerged early, honed on dusty township pitches with local side Young Pirates, managed by his uncles.

By age 17, he joined Seven Stars in South Africa’s first division in 1995, scoring prolifically and setting the stage for a remarkable career.

Club career

McCarthy’s club career spanned South Africa, Europe, and back, establishing him as one of the continent’s finest strikers.

After scoring 39 goals in 49 games for Seven Stars, he briefly played for Cape Town Spurs before Ajax Amsterdam signed him in 1997 following standout performances at youth international tournaments.

At Ajax, he won the Eredivisie in his debut season (1997-98), scoring 10 goals, and added 11 more the next year.

In 1999, McCarthy transferred to Celta Vigo in Spain for €6 million, a record fee for a South African at the time. His three seasons there yielded 22 goals in 96 appearances, though he struggled for consistency.

A 2001-02 loan to FC Porto in Portugal proved transformative, with 12 goals in 11 games. Porto signed him permanently in 2003, and under José Mourinho, he enjoyed his peak years.

In 2003-04, he won the Primeira Liga Golden Boot with 20 goals in 23 matches and scored crucial goals en route to Porto’s UEFA Champions League title, making him the only South African to lift the trophy.

He tallied 46 goals in 85 games for Porto.

In 2006, Blackburn Rovers brought him to the English Premier League for £2.5 million. He excelled, scoring 24 goals in his first season (2006-07), finishing second in the league’s scoring charts.

His Rovers stint produced 52 goals in 140 appearances.

A move to West Ham United in 2010 was less successful, with no goals in 14 games, hampered by fitness issues.

Returning to South Africa in 2011, he joined Orlando Pirates, winning a domestic treble (Premier Soccer League, MTN 8, and Nedbank Cup) in 2011-12, scoring 10 goals in 26 matches before retiring in 2013.

International career

McCarthy is South Africa’s record goalscorer with 31 goals in 80 caps for Bafana Bafana, debuting in 1997 against the Netherlands.

He starred at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring four goals as South Africa finished runners-up, and played at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

His standout international moment came at the 2002 World Cup, where he scored against Spain.

Despite occasional friction with coaches—leading to absences from the 2006 and 2010 AFCON tournaments—his impact on South African football remains unmatched.

Managerial and coaching career

McCarthy began as head coach of Cape Town City in 2017, leading them to the MTN 8 title in his first season.

In 2019, he took over AmaZulu FC, guiding them to a second-place finish in the 2020-21 South African Premier Division, their best-ever result, and a CAF Champions League spot.

His attacking philosophy shone through in both roles.

In 2022, McCarthy joined Manchester United as a first-team coach under Erik ten Hag, focusing on strikers.

He played a key role in Marcus Rashford’s 2022-23 resurgence (30 goals) and helped the team win the 2023 FA Cup.

He left United in June 2024 amid a staff reshuffle.

Now, as he prepares to take charge of Harambee Stars, McCarthy aims to elevate Kenya’s national team, starting with crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon in March 2025.

Accolades

McCarthy holds the record as the all-time top scorer for Bafana Bafana, having netted 31 goals, and proudly represented his nation in two World Cups, in 1998 and 2002.

His club career is equally impressive, marked by significant titles such as the UEFA Champions League and Intercontinental Cup, both won with Porto in 2004.

Additionally, he secured the Portuguese league title twice.

McCarthy’s individual brilliance was recognized with awards like the African Cup of Nations Best Player in 1998 and the Ajax Talent of the Year in 1997-98.

Transitioning to a managerial role, McCarthy continued to demonstrate his leadership and tactical acumen, leading Cape Town City to victory in the MTN8 Cup in 2018, adding another significant achievement to his illustrious career.

Winnie Byanyima, a Ugandan aeronautical engineer, politician, human rights activist and diplomat, has carved an extraordinary path from her roots in Mbarara District to the global stage as the Executive Director of UNAIDS.

Known for her fierce advocacy for social justice, gender equality, and health as a human right, Byanyima’s life story is one of resilience, ambition and principled leadership.

In this article, WoK takes a look at Byanyima whose journey continues to inspire countless individuals, particularly women in Africa and beyond.

Education

Born on January 13, 1959, in Mbarara, Uganda, to Boniface Byanyima, a prominent Democratic Party leader, and Gertrude Byanyima, a schoolteacher, Winnie grew up in a household that valued education.

She attended Mount Saint Mary’s College Namagunga in Mukono District before pursuing higher studies abroad.

At the University of Manchester, she earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering, becoming the first Ugandan woman to achieve this milestone.

She later obtained a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in energy conservation, from Cranfield University in the UK.

Early career

Byanyima’s early career began at Uganda Airlines, where she worked as a flight engineer—a role that showcased her technical prowess.

However, her life took a dramatic turn in the early 1980s when Yoweri Museveni, now Uganda’s long-serving president, launched the 1981–1986 Ugandan Bush War against Milton Obote’s regime.

Abandoning her job, Byanyima joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) rebellion, a decision influenced by her close ties to Museveni.

Raised together in the Byanyima household, where her family funded Museveni’s education, their bond was deep—though it would later fray.

During the war, she fought alongside Museveni and her future husband, Kizza Besigye, demonstrating her commitment to Uganda’s liberation.

Later career

After the NRA’s victory in 1986, Byanyima transitioned into diplomacy and politics.

She served as Uganda’s ambassador to France from 1989 to 1994, sharpening her skills on the international stage.

Returning to Uganda, she entered politics, winning the Mbarara Municipality parliamentary seat in 1994 and advocating for women’s rights during the drafting of the 1995 Constitution.

She founded the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE), cementing her legacy as a champion of gender equality.

Her career soared globally in the 2000s. From 2006, she directed the Gender Team at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), focusing on development policy.

In 2013, she became the Executive Director of Oxfam International, a role she held until 2019, where she tackled inequality and co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2015.

Since November 2019, Byanyima has led UNAIDS as its Executive Director and a UN Under-Secretary-General, driving efforts to end the AIDS pandemic by 2030.

Her tenure has been marked by calls for equitable access to medicines, including her recent push at the 2024 International AIDS Conference for generic licensing of HIV treatments.

Personal life

July 7, 1999, Byanyima married Kizza Besigye, a former NRA comrade and later a leading opposition figure as the head of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

The couple has one son, Anselm, born from a union that has weathered significant political turbulence.

Besigye’s repeated presidential challenges against Museveni—most recently marked by his 2024 arrest and treason charges—have thrust Byanyima into the spotlight as a steadfast supporter, even as she balances her global responsibilities.

Though she remains an FDC member, her partisan involvement has waned since becoming a diplomat in 2004.

Relationship with Yoweri Museveni

In a recent interview, Byanyima spoke about this past relationship.

She acknowledged that it was a part of her life that occurred, and she does not wish to deny it.

Additionally, she mentioned that Museveni was someone she had seen frequently as a visitor in her home, and whatever transpired between them is something that has already happened and cannot be changed.

“It was a normal relationship with President Museveni. It had some challenges, and I left it, but it is not relevant to the political discussion,” she said.

Museveni’s son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba responded to Byanyima’s statement, accusing her of trying to wreck their home and that Museveni kicked her out.

“There was nothing normal about your relationship with my father. You found a happy home and tried to wreck it. You’re a disaster of a woman,” he said.

Byanyima warned Muhoozi to go slow about her past relationship with his father, warning that she may need to provide hard evidence to prove her facts.

“There is a more complex history between your father and I that we have both chosen to move past with mutual respect. However, if you continue to present a false narrative, I may need to provide hard evidence of the facts. I prefer to maintain our dignified approach, but that choice remains yours. I consider this matter closed,” she responded.

On Tuesday, February 18, all eyes were on the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) as Sudanese nationals linked to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gathered to sign the Sudan Founding Charter, a political agreement designed to create a parallel civilian government.

The RSF is a paramilitary group in Sudan, originally formed in 2013, made of several militia factions, including the notorious Janjaweed militia, which had been involved in the Darfur conflict.

Initially formed to combat rebels in the Darfur region, it took over from Janjaweed which had been accused of committing serious human rights violations and has risen to become the most powerful and controversial forces in Sudan due to its large size, military capability, and control.

The movement is led by General Hamdan Mohamed Dagalo, widely known as ‘Hemedti’ or “Little Mohamed,”. The military leader has risen from humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful figures in Sudan’s political and military landscape.

Born around 1974 in Darfur, Hemedti comes from the Mahariya tribe of the Rizeigat community, a group deeply involved in camel trading. With limited formal education—having dropped out of school at a young age —he started his career as a camel trader.

Hemedti’s rise to power began in his youth when his trade convoy was attacked, resulting in the death of 60 of his family members and the theft of his camels. In response, he joined the Janjaweed, an Arab militia group that played a significant role in the Darfur conflict, which escalated in the early 2000s.

Hemedti rose through the ranks during the Darfur conflict, becoming a key ally of Sudan’s former dictator, Omar al-Bashir. His leadership in crushing opposition led to his appointment as commander of the Janjaweed, and later, as the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group formed in 2013.

Dagalo rose to the rank of lieutenant general, gaining significant autonomy, which allowed him to seize control of lucrative gold mines in Darfur that belonged to a rival tribal leader. This move greatly expanded his wealth. Under his leadership, the RSF quickly became one of the most dominant and feared military factions in Sudan.

Despite his close ties with al-Bashir, Hemedti turned on him during the 2019 Sudanese uprising, which led to al-Bashir’s overthrow. He positioned himself as a key figure in the transitional government that followed, holding the title of deputy head of the Transitional Military Council.

He would later become part of the Sovereignty Council, a power-sharing arrangement between military and civilian leaders, meant to guide Sudan towards civilian rule.

During the uprising however, his forces faced accusations of committing atrocities, including the massacre of over 100 protesters, which further tarnished his reputation for ruthlessly cracking down on opposition, although he denied any role in the events.

In 2021, under Hemedti’s leadership, the RSF staged a coup that further destabilized Sudan’s already fragile political system, overthrowing the civilian-military government that had been established in 2019. This sparked widespread violence between the Sudanese army and the RSF, pushing the country to the brink of civil war.

His influence has attracted global criticism, as his forces have been involved in numerous human rights violations like killings, rape and torture. Despite his political maneuvering, he has faced sanctions from the United States, which have further complicated his international relations.

Despite al-Bashir and other officials facing ICC charges for genocide, Dagalo has not been charged, despite accusations of war crimes by his forces over the past decade.

Kenya hence finds itself in a challenging position. While President William Ruto supports Sudan’s internationally recognized government, Kenya’s involvement with the RSF undermines its diplomatic relations. The RSF’s establishment of a parallel government in Nairobi only worsens the complexity of Kenya’s stance.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is reported to be critically ill and has been receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital for the past week.

The former IEBC chief’s illness has been kept private, and he is reportedly being treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Chebukati rose to the helm of IEBC in 2017, where he served for a full term of six years and retired in January 2023.

He oversaw the 2017 and 2022 General Elections, both of which were marred by controversy surrounding their outcomes, solidifying his role in the history of Kenyan elections.

Career

Chebukati is a lawyer and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya specializing in international commerce, trade and investment law, corporate law, governance and environmental law.

Prior to becoming the IEBC chairman, Chebukati held various roles in both the public and private sectors. He served as a legal advisor and consultant to numerous organizations and government bodies, building a wealth of experience in corporate governance, legal affairs, and election management.

He founded Cootow & Associates Advocates, where he served as managing director. The law firm provides a wide range of legal services, including maritime and shipping law, company secretarial services, aviation law, arbitration, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), as well as insurance, banking, and commercial law.

Before his appointment as IEBC chair, Chebukati had a brief political career. In 2007, he contested the Saboti parliamentary seat as a candidate for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), but was defeated by Eugene Wamalwa, who ran under the Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.

In January 2017, he succeeded Issack Hassan as the chairman of the IEBC.

Chebukati faced major challenges during his tenure, especially in the controversial 2017 election, which was annulled by the Supreme Court due to irregularities. This sparked increased scrutiny and protests over the commission’s handling of the election.

In the 2022 election, Chebukati’s role was questioned once more due to irregularities, such as delayed results and discrepancies in data transmission. The delays in announcing results also fueled tension and mistrust among political parties and the public.

Despite these challenges, Chebukati ensured a peaceful election in 2022, unlike in 2017, when protests resulted in fatalities and many injuries.

Personal Life

Before his illness, Chebukati, who values his privacy, enjoyed playing golf and had served as both captain and chairman of Mombasa and Nyali Golf clubs. He was also a member of the Kenya Golfing Society.

Family

Chebukati is married to his wife, Mary, who serves as the chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA). They have three children: two sons, Jonathan and Emmanuel, and a daughter, Rachel. While Jonathan leads a private life, Rachel has a successful career in law, and Emmanuel works in data analytics.

Legacy

Chebukati’s career combines legal knowledge with managing elections. His time as head of the IEBC has made him a key figure in Kenya’s democracy, though not without controversy. He is seen as an important player in Kenya’s election reforms, earning both respect and criticism for his role in shaping the country’s voting system.
