Teachers around the country are set to enjoy a salary hike following the release of a new salary structure by the Teachers Service Commission.

The first phase of the new salary structure, which took effect on July 1, 2025, resulted from a new four-year collective bargaining agreement signed by the TSC and teachers’ unions, including KNUT and KUPPET.

In its statement, TSC stated that the salary increase was a response to long-standing concerns raised by teachers and their unions.

The new salary structure introduced a new salary band that is set to increase the minimum and maximum salaries of teachers in public schools. The increment will be implemented gradually over a four-year period and will bolster the paychecks of teachers across all job groups, from B5 to D5.

The table below shows a breakdown of the new salary changes as provided by TSC across all job groups:

Old vs. New TSC Salary Structure (2025–2029 CBA)

The salary increases cut across the entire cadre of TSC teachers, from newly employed primary school teachers to high-ranking chief principals. Currently, TSC has a workforce of at least 400,000 teachers actively serving in Kenyan public schools.

In a statement, TSC stated that the salary increment would increase teacher motivation, enhance equality, and improve service delivery across the education sector.

“It is our firm belief that through such progressive awards, the majority of the key concerns raised by the teachers have been fully addressed, and the Commission will be able to have a motivated, ethical, and globally competitive teacher in its service.”

Aside from the salary increases, the CBA includes new teacher promotions, better working conditions, and increased commuter allowances, as shown in the table below:

TSC Commuter Allowances (2025–2029 CBA)

The CBA will undoubtedly improve the education sector and align teacher welfare with ongoing national education reforms.

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) recently approved Stephan Cretier, the CEO of KK Security Limited, to acquire its parent company Canada-based Doctor No Parent Limited, making him its sole owner.

Doctor No Parent operates in Kenya through GardaWorld Limited, where Crétier is the CEO, trading as Kenya Kazi Services better known as KK Security Limited.

KK Security provides services like manned security guarding, facilities management, canine security, VIP protection, and cash-in-transit.

“The CAK has approved the proposed acquisition of sole control of Doctor No Parent Limited by Mr Cretier unconditionally,” the regulator said in a statement.

“This approval has been granted based on the finding that the transaction is unlikely to negatively impact competition in the market for the provision of private security and facility management, nor elicit negative public interest concerns,” the competition watchdog explained.

GardaWorld offers solutions such as security guard services, cash transportation, and risk management across various industries and countries. Under his leadership, GardaWorld has expanded internationally and now operates in more than 40 countries.

Career

Stephan Crétier, the owner of KK Security’s parent company GardaWorld Security
Photo: Courtesy

Stephan began the company in 1995 with an investment of $25,000( Kshs 3.28 million) he raised by placing a second mortgage on his home.

His entry into the security industry was unexpected. While on an international scouting trip to the USA, he worked as a store detective and noticed that recruiters weren’t properly vetting security guards.

Seeing this gap, he decided to take action. Drawing from his background in baseball and umpiring, he founded GardaWorld, focusing on professionalism and stricter hiring standards to improve security services.

His early months as an entrepreneur were tough, with the pressure of nearly filing for bankruptcy four times. However, as time passed, the business began to grow, and in his first year, he earned $600,000 (Kshs 77.5 million).

Fast forward to today, and GardaWorld now generates over $5 billion (Kshs 647.7 million) in annual revenue. It has become one of the largest employers in the security industry, with 122,000 employees worldwide.

The security mogul privatized GardaWorld in a $1.1 billion( kshs 142 billion) deal with the support of private equity firm Apax Partners. Later, in 2019, he led the largest buyout in Canadian history, valued at $5.2 billion(Kshs 672 billion), in collaboration with BC Partners. As a result, Crétier and selected management now own 49% of GardaWorld, allowing him to retain significant control over the company.

How To Join KK Security

To join KK Security, you need to be physically fit, have a clean criminal record, hold a valid security guard license, complete the necessary training, and exhibit excellent customer service skills.

Depending on the role, additional qualifications may be required, such as expertise in canine handling or close protection for specialized positions. All candidates must also adhere to the high standards of compliance and ethical conduct set by the GardaWorld group.

To apply for a role at the company, visit the KK Security Careers page to submit your CV or express interest in a role with KK Security.

Check the box of your country of origin, fill in your first and last name, add your email address and phone number and submit your CV.

Ensure you state the subject and body of your application in the dedicated input fields.

Only shortlisted candidates are contacted for interview.

Public university lecturers have been in a standoff with the government, demanding improved salaries as outlined in their 2025-29 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) proposals.

Belonging to Job Groups 11 to 15, lecturers are expected to receive a significant pay rise compared to other professions. However, they argue that the increase is long overdue and continue to push for its implementation.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) has also proposed increases in house, car and commuter allowances and other allowances for academic staff.

“Annual increments shall be awarded across the grades from July 1, 2025, up to June 30, 2029, at an average rate of six per cent of basic salary, subject to respective salary grade ceiling,” said Uasu Secretary General Constantine Wasonga in the proposal.

Here is a breakdown of the new salary increments from the lowest to highest paid:

The lowest paid worker according to the CBA is graduate/research assistant who is under job Grade 10A band D5, earning a basic pay of Kshs 63,647. Should the CBA take effect on July 1, the figure is set to rise to Kshs 68,739 from July and Kshs 74,239 from July 2026, Kshs 80,179 in July 2027, and Kshs 86,594 in the subsequent year.

An assistant lecturer or a tutorial fellow/junior research fellow who falls in the in Grade 11A, Band E1, currently earning Sh107,872, will get Kshs 116,502 from July, Kshs 125,832 from July next year, Kshs 135,889 from July 2027 and Kshs 146,761 in July 2028.

Next on the list is a lecturer or research fellow placed in Grade 12A band E2, earning Kshs 121,928. Their pay will be increased to Kshs 131,683 from July, bumped up to Kshs142,218 from July next year, Kshs 153,596 in July 2027 and kshs 165,884 in 2028.

Senior lecturers and research fellows who fall in Grade 13A Band E3, and earns Kshs 154,739, will from July earn Kshs 167,119, Kshs 180,489 from July next year, Kshs 194, 929 July 2027, and Kshs 210,524 the following year.

An associate professor comes next, placed in Grade 14A Band E4 and currently earns Kshs 193,182. From July 1, the proposal recommends a basic salary of Kshs 208,637 from July, Kshs 243,355 from July 2027 and Kshs 262,824 in 2028.

The highest-paid on the list is a full professor earning basic pay of Kshs 224,631. If the proposal os signed, he/she will take home Kshs 242,602 from July, Kshs 262,011 from July next year, Kshs 282,972 from July 2027 and Kshs 305,610 in July 2028.

Breakdown of Allowances

House Allowance

Uasu proposes that allowance increase across all grades similar to the salaries and hence the dons will be receiving a boost for housing.

Professors and research professors currently earning Kshs h73,715 will get Kshs 116,028 while associate professors/associate research professors will receive Kshs 104,426 from Kshs 66,344. Senior lecturers/senior research fellows will earn Kshs 92,822 from Kshs 58,972 while lecturers/research fellows take home Kshs 87,020 from Kshs 55,286.

The union proposes a house allowance of Kshs 81,220 for lecturers/tutorial fellows/junior research fellows, from Kshs 51,601. Additionally, graduate assistants/teaching assistants/research assistants will earn Kshs55,692, from Kshs 35,383.

Car and Commuter Allowance

Professors and research professors will receive a boost from Kshs 50,000 to Kshs 60,000 every month while associate professor/associate research professors will earn Kshs 60,000 from Kshs 40,000. Senior lecturer/senior research fellow will receive Kshs 60,000 from Kshs 32,000.

“Lecturer/research fellow Sh60,000 up from Sh24,000, assistant lecturer/tutorial fellow/junior research fellow Sh60,000 up from Sh20,000, graduate assistant/teaching assistant Sh60,000 up from Sh20,000 and part-timers getting Sh20,000 from Sh15,000,” the CBA read.

Risk Allowance

UASU has proposed monthly risk allowances for staff exposed to hazards, including those in medicine, veterinary, engineering, ICT, and other scientific fields.

They also seek extraneous allowances for extra responsibilities, long working hours, or high-stress roles, particularly for teaching staff in medicine, nursing, and administrative positions. Additional proposals include daily subsistence allowances for official assignments outside assigned duty stations.

Others include professorial allowance to be paid monthly and book and ICT allowance to be paid annually to members.

“Annual leave allowance shall be paid annually to teaching members. Non-practice allowance shall be paid monthly to teaching members of staff who are registered professionals in any field,” the document added.

UASU also proposes setting the retirement age at 70 years for graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, assistant lecturers, and junior research fellows, while lecturers, senior lecturers, associate professors, and professors would retire at 74 years.

In the event of a staff member’s death, UASU proposes that families of permanent or contract academic staff receive death benefits per Pension Scheme stipulates. They are to be compensated with 96 months’ gross salary under the group life insurance policy.

Additionally, the employer should cover the following expenses: three months’ gross salary for members with over two years of service, two months’ salary for those with one but less than two years of service and one month’s salary for less than one year of service, plus Ksh 80,000 for coffin expenses.

The proposal follows a nationwide strike that disrupted learning across the country. The union is urging the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to factor it into the 2025-26 budget, warning that failure to do so could spark renewed conflict between lecturers and the government.

In the midst of a biting economy that has forced Kenyans to be ingenious and creative, Leaky Analo, a boda boda rider in Nairobi, has resorted to social media platform TikTok to make an extra living.

While many Kenyans prefer to share the glam of their lives on social media, Analo uses his handle to narrate the daily struggles of his hustle and the economic state of his household without sugarcoating it. As a result, he occasionally gets help from empathetic followers.

Analo lives with his wife, Yvonne Nanjala, and their daughter in a one-roomed house in Mathare, Nairobi County. In December 2024, Nanjala hatched the plan to use TikTok to share their life struggles, and that is how their channel, “Dolly Family” was established.

“We saw other people creating content and thought, why not share our real life, no hiding, just being open,” Analo told Citizen TV.

“As we scrolled through TikTok, we saw many people benefiting. So we decided to start too,” Yvonne adds.

Since then, Leaky Analo has crafted a routine incorporating his main hustle which is ferrying passengers using the boda boda and recording TikTok videos in between trips.

His day begins early, and therefore, delays his breakfast to later in the day. On some days, business is good, and he makes enough to cover his family’s needs. On other days, he falls short, but they have to persevere.

On TikTok, Analo tells it as it is. On a good day, he can manage to fuel the motorbike, pay the owner Ksh400 and take home Ksh400.

“One day, I worked the whole day, paid the bike owner Ksh400, fueled the motorbike, and I was left with just Ksh400. That’s the reality I show people,” Analo narrates.

“In life, you must endure. When he earns little, we manage with what we have, and as women, sometimes we have to make sacrifices,” Nanjala adds.

Leaky Analo and Yvonne Nanjala intend to leverage their growing following on TikTok to transition fully into reputable content creators. They also called upon the government to curb inflation and ease the cost of living.

Felix Odiwuor, the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata, widely recognized as Jalang’o, has ignited debate by disclosing the salaries of well-known Kenyan radio hosts.

In a recent episode of the Iko Nini podcast, Jalang’o addressed the earnings of Maina Kageni and Daniel Ndambuki, popularly referred to as King’ang’i, who are the hosts of the highly-rated breakfast show on Classic 105 FM.

Jalang’o revealed that both Kageni and Ndambuki receive salaries ranging from Ksh 2 million to Ksh 3 million.

He further noted that, in his opinion, he would set a limit on Maina Kageni’s salary at Ksh 2 million, although he acknowledged the significant revenue generated by Kageni’s show.

“When Maina goes on air, there is a commercial on every break. Everything is sponsored. He makes the station around Ksh 10 million in a day. Why not give him Ksh 3 million because if he leaves, the money won’t be as good,” he said.

Jalang’o remarked that other notable presenters, such as Gidi Gidi and Ghost Mulee, receive substantial compensation.

He pointed out Gidi Gidi’s luxurious lifestyle, citing his remarkable house in the countryside and his residence in the affluent Karen area as indicators of the lucrative nature of the industry.

Kageni’s journey into radio began unexpectedly.

Initially sent to the UK to study law, he dropped out and returned to Kenya, where he stumbled into radio while attempting to promote an event.

Unable to pay for a voice-over, Kageni offered to do it himself, impressing the station’s management and landing a job at Capital FM.

He later moved to Nation FM and then to Radio Africa Group, where his salary reportedly exceeds Ksh 2 million per month.

Kageni has diversified his career into PR consultancy and other business ventures, and he plans to retire soon to focus on personal businesses, including a nightclub in Miami.

On the other hand, Mwalimu King’ang’i has been a significant part of the Maina and King’ang’i show, which discusses social issues and relationships.

King’ang’i’s comedic approach complements Kageni’s style, contributing to the show’s popularity.

He is also known for his engaging interactions with listeners and guests on air.

In response to President William Ruto’s directive to raise police salaries, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has introduced new ranks and salary scales for police officers.

The commission, chaired by Eliud Kinuthia, reviewed the remuneration for police officers and civilian staff in the National Police Service (NPS) in collaboration with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to implement the new salary structures.

“In the fulfillment of the promises and pledges, the National government established the Maraga’s taskforce whose recommendations include review and increase in Police Officers’ salaries pursuant to this recommendation and the mandate of the NPSC,” he said.

The salaries have been reviewed upwards, including a rise in the basic pay for police constables at entry level, the rank for those who have recently graduated from college.

A police constable’s salary has been increased from Ksh 21,645 to Ksh 25,645, receiving a boom of Kshs 4,000.

On the other hand, the longest-serving Police Constable (served more than 20 years) will earn a minimum monthly gross salary of Ksh 50,145 up to a maximum of Ksh 69,640.

Additionally, the commission has raised the monthly basic salary for a Senior Assistant Inspector General at entry level, from KSh 200,899 to KSh 221,915—an increase of KSh 21,026.

Meanwhile, a long-serving Senior Assistant Inspector General will receive a basic salary ranging from KSh 310,725 to KSh 409,365.

He stated that the Commission provides annual incremental notches for police officers across various cadre levels.

“Our structure allows a police officer to serve up to 20 notches of salary increment each year. Those who begin start at notch one which is Ksh 21,645 the following year they move to notch two and you serve in that one rank for up to 20 years if promotion does not come and that structure allows that,” he stated.

“The accounting officer for the National Police Service (NPS) has been tasked with ensuring that all officers, both those serving within the country and those deployed in peacekeeping missions such as Haiti, receive their salaries, benefits, and allowances,” NPSC Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia stated.

Regarding matters on promotions, Kinuthia noted that the NPSC would take into consideration age factor, and therefore Police Constables between the ages of 53 and 59 will be considered in a unique group of senior officers who are approaching retirement.

He emphasized that some of these officers have held the rank of Police Constable for over 30 years with spotless disciplinary records, suggesting that their lack of promotion is not due to any misconduct on their part.

On September 3, the commission approved the Acting Inspector General’s recommendation to promote 1,957 police officers based on merit. This includes 87 women and 1,870 men, all nearing the retirement age of 60.

Teachers continue to stand firm, pressing for better pay after a week of strikes at the start of the Third Term. The government has acknowledged their concerns and pledged to raise salaries starting at the end of this month.

Upon closer examination of the salary increments across the teachers’ job groups, it has been determined that they will receive an additional Ksh.1,000 to Ksh.3,000 on their payslips within the next two days as August ends.

The second phase of salary increases, as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed last year between teachers and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), was expected to begin last month. However, its implementation was delayed due to claims of insufficient government funds.

Following the industrial action witnessed this week, TSC has assured teachers that the government has already remitted KShs 13 billion to finance the increment.

As a result, the lowest-paid teacher at Grade B5 will now receive a basic salary of Ksh.23,830, an increase from Ksh.22,739.

A senior teacher at the primary school level, currently at grade C2, will see their basic salary increase from Ksh.45,776 to Ksh.47,858.

A teacher at the mid-grade of C5, including primary school head teachers, will see their maximum basic pay increase from Ksh.78,667 to Ksh.79,651.

The highest-paid teacher, a chief principal at Grade D5, currently earns Ksh.159,534 in basic pay, which is set to increase to Ksh.162,539.

Based on these figures, the pay rise ranges from Ksh.1,037 for the lowest-paid teachers to Ksh.3,005 for those at the highest level.

The increment also comes with four allowances which include commuter, house, leave and hardship. Here is a breakdown of how much the instructors will receive:

Teachers will receive allowances ranging from Kshs 3,850 to a maximum of Kshs 50,000. Those receiving commuter allowance will get a minimum of KShs 4,000 and a maximum of KShs 16,000.

Following complaints of tough working conditions, teachers are entitled to between Ksh.6,600 and Ksh.38,100 depending on job group and location.

They are entitled to leave allowances of between Ksh.4,000 and Ksh.10,000 depending on the job group, payable once a year.

Teachers are also entitled to housing allowance, clustered under three broad areas categorized as per location.

Teachers in the cluster one, meaning based in Nairobi will receive between Ksh.6,750 and Ksh.50,000 in house allowance.

Those from cities and major towns including Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Nyeri will get housing allowance that is between Ksh.4,500 and Ksh.35,000.

Cluster three includes other areas categorized as former municipalities that attract housing allowances of between Ksh.3,850 and Ksh.25,000.

The Ministry of Education has assured that the necessary resources will be included in the August salaries, along with arrears from July 2024. President William Ruto has also confirmed that the salaries will be ready within the next two days.

With the significant duties, he is poised to receive a lucrative salary and a suite of perks for his role as the director and overseer of the African Union.

In addition to the Ksh 2.1 million monthly salary, the AUC Chairperson is also entitled to a monthly rental budget of $6,000 (Ksh 772,500), which covers rent and utilities such as electricity and internet.

Raila Odinga is competing against other notable candidates for the AU Chairmanship, including Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Youssouf, Mauritius’ Anil Gayan, and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.

Chiefs and their assistant chiefs play a critical role in ensuring the national government presence is felt at the grassroots level.

These officers are tasked with preventing crime, arbitrating in disputes in their jurisdiction, sensitising residents about government programmes among other duties.

The chiefs are assisted by village elders who identify criminals and arbitrate in land and family disputes. To make their work easier, Chiefs in some jurisdictions have been given motorbikes.

Qualifications of being a Chief in Kenya

While some of these requirements are never adhered too, especially academic qualifications, a candidate will generally be considered for appointment as a chief if he has the following:

REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT

For appointment to this grade, candidates MUST:-
1. Be in possession of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade C or its approved equivalent with C in English or Kiswahili.
2. Be thirty five (35) years old and above
3. Have worked in the Public Service for a minimum period of five (5) years.
4. Be in possession of a certificate in Public Administration/Management, Social Work/Community Development, Teaching, Disaster Management or its equivalent from recognized University
5. Be a resident of the particular Sub-Location
6. Be a person of integrity who commands respect and,
7. Possess good communication skills

Good news for Chiefs And Their Assistants

The government introduced a new scheme that will see chiefs and their assistants rise to other positions starting from assistant county commissioners (previously known as District Officers or DOs), deputy county commissioners, county commissioners all the way to regional coordinators (previously known as provincial commissioners or PCs).

So how much do these officers earn?

Unlike in the past, Chiefs and their assistants are now eligible to be promoted to higher positions in the national administration structure. This career mobility means the grassroots administrators can become assistant county commissioners, deputy county commissioners, county commissioners and even regional commissioners.

Until 2005, senior chiefs used to earn ksh15,600 excluding housing allowances and other benefits. This was reversed to ksh33,384, although reports seemed to suggest that the increment was never effected.

Chiefs earn less than ksh40,000 before the increment while their assistants take home just above ksh20,000. Kenya has a total of 6,000 chiefs and assistant chiefs. Next
