One may consider Somalia a failed state and rightly so. Al Shabaab terror group turned the country upside down and were extending their bad behavior into neighboring countries. But the country is on a mend. Kenya, Uganda, Burundi sent their troops to cut the legs of al shabaab and they have done a pretty job at it. A lot needs to be done and the only way to achieve this is to allow the Somalis to be in charge of their own security. So how much are Somali policemen and women paid?

Salary of Somali Police Forces (SPF)
Being a police officer in Somalia is not an enviable vocation. The possibility of an al shabaab element strapped with bombs blowing himself to further their cause is a daily reality. The 6,800 Somalis who make the police force need all the encouragement to hold their fragile country together. To motivate the SPF, the European Union (EU) topped up their salary by $300 per month.
Part of the statement on the increment read by EU Head of Delegation and Ambassador to Somalia Veronique Lorenzo :

“salary top-up payments to the Somali Police have been a major engagement from the European Union since 2014 in order to ensure that police officers are adequately compensated for providing increased security, law and order. Regular payments are critical to ensure loyalty, commitment, morale, performance and retention of skilled police officers and the EU recognizes the improvement by the Somali government in ensuring that salaries to the security forces are paid on time”.

This increment means that the officers are well paid than their Ugandan counterparts. The Somali army has, however, been downed their tools after going for months without pay.

Col. Abdi Mohamed Ahmed told Reuter’s:

“The military soldiers here have not taken salaries for four months. We are now on (the) way to Mogadishu,” Ahmed said.

“It is painful to be in the frontline and fighting al Shabaab while your wife and kids are starving.” Next

The song ‘Afande’ by Kyadondo East member of parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is an indictment of how police officers are misused to silence dissenting voices by the powers that be. Wine wonders why police use unnecessary force against his kind (read protesters) when all he is doing is fighting for their rights. The less than 4 minutes song mention poor pay among the rank and file of police officers in Uganda as one of the things the 37 year old face of resistance is keen on mending. The melodic yet hard hitting chorus of the song castigate police officers who have brutally arrested the legislator severally.

Here are the lyrics to the chorus:
Sipigani nawe lakini nakupigania Afande,
I am not fighting with you I am fighting for you
Afande sipigani nawe nakupigania
Sipigani nawe lakini nakupigania
Afande napigania maisha yako Kwa sababu unapata mshahara kidogo
Unafanya na bidii unaishi kama maskini
Hata ukialika ni mamaingi ya pole Why?
Even if you do these things under instructions,
You’re a human being
He goes on to translate the same chorus in English:
Whatever, situations oppress us
Oppress you too
You reside in terrible accommodation
Your income is too low
Your people are badly off
When I talk about these things
You torture me, but what for?

How much does a Kenya Airways (abbreviated as KQ) earn per month? This is among the many queries that you will find on search engines.

For starters, KQ was founded on 22 January 1977 after the collapse of the East African Community and subsequent winding up of operations of the East African Airways (EAA).

The airline fortunes have been on a downward spiral quickly losing luster as the ‘Pride of Africa’. KQ has been dogged by pilots strikes and suffered heavy losses over the years.

According to KQ website, the airlines has a total of 32 aircrafts. KQ carries over three million passengers annually in the 51 destinations it flies. 43 of these destinations are in Africa.

Shareholders

KQ was wholly owned by the Kenyan Government until April 1995 when it was privatized. The company is now a public private partnership. With the shareholders as indicated below (Source Wikipedia):

Government of Kenya-48.9 %

KQ Lenders Company 2017 Ltd-38.1%

KLM-7.8%

Private Owners-5.2%

Changes at the apex of KQ was informed by the need to resuscitate the company to profitable. Sebastian Mikosz was brought in as Kenya Airways Group’s managing director and chief executive officer (CEO). Sebastian was to later on be replaced by Allan Kilavuka.

Former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph was appointed as the airline’s chairman in 2016.

Allowances and salaries of Kenya Airways pilots

KQ pilots have downed their tools on several occasions to demand for better enumeration. The carrier has a total of 414 pilots and 38 planes that are operational.

According to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) entered between Kenya Airline Pilots Association (Kalpa) and the Government that was to take effect in 2018, pilots maternity cover was to be upped to kes200,000 from kes40,000.

Inpatient cover was to go upwards of Ksh4 million from Ksh2.7 million. Outpatient cover was pegged at Ksh200,000 per family from the previous Ksh40,000 for not more than six individuals.

Pilots account to 45 percent of the carrier’s wage bill.

Salary of KQ Pilots

Captains-Captains earn an average monthly salary of Ksh1.6 million

Gross Salary for pilots flying Boeing-Ksh483,350

Pilots flying Embraer-Ksh407,916

House allowance for captains-Ksh36,000

First Officers-Ksh30,814

Pilots flying outside Kenya-Ksh20,000

Salary of a registered nurse in South Africa varies with education, experience, location among other factors. We take a look at their pay and qualification to be registered nurse.

South Africa is among the few countries in the continent that pay registered nurses fairly well. The working conditions are not as strenuous as, say, Kenya. According to a Kenya Workforce report, Kenyan nurses work overtime at least three times more than their counterparts in South Africa. While this is the sad reality, a nurse in South Africa gets way much more in enumeration than a Kenyan nurse.

His rise to the top was a copy paste of the ‘from rags to riches stories’. Dennis Itumbi was a staunch defender of President Uhuru Kenyatta-if only he did not overdo it. His over-zealousness compounded with lack of tact-led to his demotion and ‘expulsion from State House where he enjoyed near unfettered access to the Head of State House.

Demotion
Before the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) was restructured, Itumbi was the Digital Director Innovations & Diaspora Communication State House. The Deputy Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita was keen on streamlining the President’s unstructured communication that had made a habit of issuing statements-mostly conflicting-without approval. The first casualty was Dennis Itumbi. He was reportedly kicked out of State House and his changed bio was proof enough of a man whose career was sinking. His twitter bio has since changed to: Kenyan Journalist, Digital Strategist and Blogger. Currently Secretary Digital. Innovations&Diaspora Comms.

Apparently, CS Matiang’i through PSC, demanded that State House sack @OleItumbi and crew.

PSC wrote back saying that they have abolished the positions.

Still, there isn’t a letter communicating the individuals that they have been sacked. So technically, they haven’t. pic.twitter.com/ceslFqYugJ

— Original RAO (@RobertAlai) March 19, 2020

Working from Harambee Annex Office
According to a story appearing on Business Today, Dennis Itumbi is now working from Deputy President William Ruto’s Harambee House Annex office. With his propagandist credentials, Itumbi is seen as a valuable player in DP’s Ruto grand plans of being the next President of Kenya come 2022. His downfall was accelerated when Uhuru and his erstwhile political nemesis decided to bury the hatchet and work together in building a united Kenya. Ruto, who has been receiving bad publicity, will find the services of Dennis Itumbi useful ahead of the next presidential election. A recent poll by IPSOS ranked the DP as the most corrupt leader in Kenya.

Dennis Itumbi salary
While his salary still remains the same, it’s the trapping of power the 39 year old will miss most. However, all is not lost for the man who was a darling of TV political shows where he defended-if not vigorously-his boss and the Jubilee Party. His salary is estimated at kes320,000 and he will get much more working for the DP.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) rolled into Somalia eager to obliterate the Alshabab militants once and for all in an operation codenamed Linda Nchi. Since setting foot in Somalia on 16 October 2011, the Kenyan troops have successfully minimized unprovoked attacks on Kenyan soil by the marauding militants. Gallant soldiers have paid the ultimate price for the good of others as the war rages on. The El Adde attack was a remainder of the evil designs of the terrorist organization and why all efforts must be put in place to stop their evil designs. We take a look at how much our soldiers serving in Somalia and those flushing the terrorists from Boni forest earn per month.
Salaries structure of Soldiers as reviewed in 2011 but took effect in 2015.

Soldiers Fighting Alshabab in Somalia
While this is risky, the returns are way attractive than fighting Al shabab in Kenya. Kenyan troops allowances went up after they were integrated into the African Mission in Somalia (Amisom). The 4,000 plus troops monthly allowance from Amisom is US$ 1,028 or an equivalent of Sh100,000 on top of their monthly salaries. Apart from the attractive allowance, the soldiers are entitled to a comprehensive medical cover.

Fighting Alshabab within the borders of Kenya
Neutralizing Alshabab fighters in Kenya is not as lucrative as hunting them down in their Somalia hideouts. According to a story carried on Nation, Soldiers allowances are not anything to wrie home about. While soldiers squaring it with Alshabab fighters in Somalia are paid by Amisom; those fighting them in Kenya are paid by the taxpayer. Daily hardship allowance for bachelors actively engaging Al Shabab in Kenya is sh20. That translates to sh600. If you are married you get double the amount which translates to Sh800.

Is this the transfer season for news anchors? The number of journalists ditching their former employers for more lucrative deals in rival TV stations has been on a crescendo. NTV has been the most affected and the reason for the departures, apart from attractive pay packages, was blamed on an autocratic management that took instructions from State House-atleast if reports on the blogosphere are anything to go by. One of the stations that has been on a recruiting spree of top talents is Citizen TV as it secures its position as the most popular TV station in Kenya. KTN-like NTV- is facing a similar hemorrhage after the unexpected exit of Yvonne Okwara, Mashirima Kapombe and Joe Ageyo to Citizen TV. The latest high profile news anchor to exist from the Standard Group owned TV station is Betty Kyalo.

Betty Kyalo
The seasoned Friday briefing news anchor has been a delight to watch over the years and it comes as a surprise that she will be joining the lowly Media Max LTD TV station. Given her pedigree, Betty Kyalo would have been just a perfect fit for either NTV or Citizen TV but she was enticed by a fat cheque at the TV station now associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

Salary at KTN
Multiple blogs have put Betty Kyalo’s salary at Kes650,000. This is more than what most Kenyans make annually. Our source, however, disputed this figure saying her salary at KTN is not above sh350,000. In a bid to retain her, Standard Group gave her an irresistible counter offer to shelve her plans of ditching the station.
Salary offered at K24
K24 ratings continue to plummet and the only way to resuscitate the station from its deathbed was to bring in a big name. The station is doing so poorly that Inooro TV, a vernacular TV station whose viewership is more segmented, has more viewers. Media Max has offered Betty Kyalo upwards of kes300,000 to have her in the station. Journalists in the station are paid between kes55,000 and the highest just above kes200,000.
