Kenyan politicians are among the richest people in Kenya. Their hefty salaries and perks makes it possible for a majority of them to lead a life many can only but dream about.
While one may assume that the children have interest in politics just like their parents, some children have gone on to forge different career paths for themselves, distant from what their parents are doing.
In this article, WoK takes a look at some of the careers pursued by children of Kenyan politicians.
1.Nyagaka Ongeri
Nyagaka Ongeri is the son of Kisii County Senator Professor Sam Ongeri, and careerwise, he has successfully managed to climb to the peak of corporate America.
According to his LinkedIn page, Nyagaka is the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ubora Advisors LLC, a New York-based advisory firm delivering innovative financing, risk, and treasury management solutions to US clients across Africa and the Middle East and enabling financing for African clients in the United States.
He boasts an impressive career, working in finance for over twenty-five years.
Nyagaka has previously worked for Maryland Bank National Associates, JP Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Absa Capital, Barclays.
2. Zachary Saitoti
Zachary Saitoti is the son of the late former Cabinet Minister and Vice President George Saitoti.
Despite the advantage that comes with his father’s name, Zachary successfully managed to chart out a path for himself, away from the prominence and political influence his late father commanded.
According to his LinkedIn page, he is the Lead Photographer, Graphic Designer & Image Retoucher at Shifteye Limited, a company he founded in 2009.
Over the course of his professional career, the young Saitoti has worked for various companies and organisations.
Between 2009 and 2012, he worked as a photographer for Clifton Photographic company, while free lancing for Fiasco Design. He also worked as a photographer and graphic designer for Soul Motive Records.
Zachary had a stint at Trap Magazine as a fashion photographer and between 2012 and 2014, he worked as the lead photographer and creative director at Cranium Ink.
Since founding Shifteye Photography in 2009, Zachary has worked as the company’s Lead Photographer, Graphic Designer & Image Retoucher. Shifteye studios is located at Argwings Kodhek Road in Hurlingham, Nairobi.
He also doubles as the company’s Studio Director, Events Coordinator, and Experience Curator.
Zachary is appraised internationally and locally having held successful exhibitions in London, Bristol, and Nairobi, Kenya.
He has had the pleasure of with Super Super Magazine, ITV Fixers, BBC, Soul Motive Records, Clifton Photographic Company, Fudd Clothing among others.
Locally, he has worked with the likes of Katungulu Mwendwa, DJ Cortega, Diana Opoti, Nivea, and Kooroo.
3. Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita is the daughter of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
She is an internationally acclaimed actress and the first Kenyan to win an Oscar for her role in the movie ’12 years a slave’.
While her father is a veteran politician in Kenya, Lupita chose to pursue her dreams in Hollywood and has since made her family and the country at large proud.
She has featured in a number of big blockbusters like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Black Panther.
4. Muhoho Kenyatta
Muhoho Kenyatta is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s last born son. He is known to keep a low profileappearing in public only during functions.
Unlike his family’s political interests, Muhoho has a passion and major interest in fashion design and has his own fashion line, and despite his family’s vast wealth, he has managed to carve out a career path for himself.
He debuted into the fashion industry in 2013 at the Kenya Fashion Week which was held at Villa Rosa Kempinski during which he showcased his Nomadic Fashion Brand collections.
The 25-year-old launched Nomadic with the help of his partners Rudradeer (Rudra) Khanna, Wasim Manji, and Waruru Wachira, who dealt with accounts, marketing and production while he created the designs.
5. Klein Kalonzo
Klein Kalonzo is the youngest son of Wiper-Kenya leader and One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principal Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka
Klein kicked off his entertainment career in music in 2014 and goes by the stage name K-Deuce.
Going all in, the budding rapper launched his own studio, Heart Beats Studios, where he doubled up as a record producer and also a rapper.
Though his name was yet to command as much influence in the country’s entertainment industry, K-Deuce was among the rappers who performed at the Franco cypher, a tribute to Congolese rhumba legend Franco.
In 2015, he collaborated with a group of musicians from Dandora by the name, Dandora Music, and together they released the song, Looking up. The video of the song was also shot in Dandora.
Though a promising young rapper, Klein has remained quiet for a while, and it is unknown whether he decided to abandon his music career.
Since Looking Up, he is yet to release a song, or at least issue an update on the status of rap career.
6. Davidson Murathe
Davidson Wakairu Gatuhi, is former Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe’s son.
He has managed to make a name for himself away from his father’s fame. He is a budding politician, businessman, and environmental activist.
Over the years, he has made an effort to educate and engage youths in the country on various matters that affect their lives and the country’s economy.
He has recently made public his desire to seek elective office in the 2022 general elections.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing and Advertising from Marbella International University Centre in Spain.
The young entrepreneur has grown to become an envy of many, leading a life that most people can only dream of.
Bragga owns and runs various companies with different interests; Davidson Wakairu Gatuhi (DWG) Holdings and DWG Wines. Both companies market and promote wines.
He owns a company called Czara Events under DWG Holdings which majors in organizing events. He has been passionate about rejuvinating the events industry in the country and use it to advance his political agenda in 2022.
7. Ian Waiguru
Ian Waiguru is the eldest son of Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru. Despite the fame that accompanies his mother, the young man has managed to chart out a successful path for himself.
The 25-year-old is an entrepreneur and since the age of 18, he has appeared on television a number of times, where he shared his passion for business.
He is the proprietor and owner of an IT company called Something Inc.
The company is said to focus on software development and creative solutions.
Something Inc also houses two of Ian’s other projects; Kadi and Lion Arts. Kila Kadi is a business card replacement app while Lion Arts is a creative writing and illustrative publishing venture.
