Kenyan politicians are known to own properties in different parts of the country, cutting across various sectors of the economy. These properties have on occasion been revealed by the politicians themselves, state agencies, or court documents.

Local leaders have taken advantage of various markets including the hospitality sector in the country. Politicians own some of the country’s top restaurants and hotels.

Here are some of the hotels owned by Kenyan governors as researched and compiled by WoK.

Azuri Restaurant & Café

The restaurant is located at the heart of Nairobi CBD. It is owned by Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi.

The restaurant is one of the leading restaurants, serving a blend of African and International Cuisine. It offers affordable and competitive prices items on the menu. Its clientele ranges from walk-in guests, to office deliveries and corporate events.

Azuri has other outlets at Imenti House 1st floor or The Nassab Building Ground Floor, Lenana road.

A & L Hotel

Located a few kilometres from Machakos Town, the luxurious hotel is owned by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.

The hotel which is derived from Alfred Mutua and Lilian Ng’ang’a’s first name initials began operations on July 24, 2020. During this Covid-19 period, the hotel operates for 12 hours from 8 am to 8 pm.

A&L hotel has a number of amenities including a restaurant, a bar and a garden, the hotel also boasts its huge and spacious family rooms that guarantee families the best holiday experience. The rooms are fitted with free Wi-Fi and a TV.

Other facilities provided in the hotel include a gym, free private parking and an outdoor terrace. The hotel is also pet friendly and guests are encouraged to tag along with their pets when they visit for them also to get an experience of their lifetime.

Its services, in summary, include: 24-hour front desk, 24-hour security, Bar, Family rooms, Free parking, Free WiFi, Garden, Internet services, Meeting/banquet facilities, Non-smoking rooms, On-site parking, Pets allowed, Private parking, Restaurant, Room service, Terrace, and WiFi available in all areas.

A night at the hotel costs Ksh11,902 per room.

Mutua has often maintained that he made his millions before he debuted into politics in 2013. The governor made a name for himself in the country’s film industry, having produced the crime series “Cobra Squad”.

Countryview Downtown Hotel

Located in Mutunduri along the Embu-Meru Highway, Countryview Downtown Hotel is an upscale modern facility, as seen from its location to interior decor and amenities. It is owned by Embu Governor Martin Wambora.

According to LinkedIn, the facility is managed by the governor’s eldest daughter, Irene Wambora, and offers accommodation for both business and pleasure in its’s sombre environment.

The hotel’s exterior colours are warm, from brick red to yellow and white, with an outdoor swimming pool spicing its vibrant appearance.

Diners are also given a chance to order from a la carte menu in the garden during daylight or under the flicker of candlelight, in the evening.

The establishment also offers sumptuous meals prepared by renowned chefs.

The rooms, are neatly maintained, with king-sized beds which offer one a chance to enjoy public wifi and air conditioning. The hotel has double rooms and single rooms too. Accommodation varies from approximately Ksh6,000 to Ksh7,000 per night for executive rooms, Ksh5,000 for double rooms and Ksh3,500 for some single rooms according to the hotel’s customer care.

Milele Beach Hotel

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan joho has been linked with the Milele Beach Hotel. The governor is said to have allegedly bought the hotel from the P.C.E.A Church.

The hotel was at one time developing an ambitious project of Holiday apartments, which has stalled for the past two years…becoming an eyesore at the junction of Bamburi Cement factory road and Mombasa Malindi Highway.

Governor Joho is yet to publicly confirm or deny ownership of the hotel.

Bienvenue Delta Hotel is located at Eldama Ravine Off Peponi Road, within the Nairobi CBD. The hotel is owned by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

The establishment features a shared lounge, restaurant and accommodation. The property is located 800 metres from Nairobi National Museum and a 12-minute walk from Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

Delta Hotel serves African, as well as American cuisine. It offers its patrons top notch services with custom made amenities and personalized services ranging from 84 hotel rooms, 3 conference halls, 2 lounges, 2 boardrooms and 1 dining space.

All the rooms are equipped with WiFi.
