Kisii High School is a boys’ only secondary school of national status that is among the oldest institutions in Kenya. It is situated approximately one mile from Kisii town central business district. Over the years, the institution has been known as an academic top gun and prides itself in churning out prominent personalities in Kenya as you will learn through this article.
History
The school was founded by the colonial government in collaboration with the natives’ council of South Kavirondo in 1934. Colonial era chief Musa Barare Nyandusi (father to Simeon Nyachae) played a critical role in organizing for the land on which the institution lies.
Initially, the school offered artisan courses with a 50% enrollment for both native Luos and Kisiis. In 1945, the school began offering junior secondary school education while in 1949 the first slot of senior secondary sat their Kenya African Secondary School Examination.
In 1953, Kisii School admitted students for P3 teachers’ training curriculum. This training lasted 3 years and was later transferred to Kabianga Teachers’ Training College. In the wake of the country’s independence, the institution began offering ‘A’ level education in arts then introduced the same for science in 1967.
Principal
The current principal is Fred Mogaka, a no nonsense man who recently deployed sniffer dogs that helped in nabbing two students who attempted to sneak marijuana to the school. One of the students had stuffed the illicit drug in a medicine wrapper while the other had it inserted into tea bags.

Fred Mogaka previously served at Riokindo High School and enabled the school to post exemplary results. He is known to occasionally don the school uniform which he says enables him to easily associate with students.
“I realize that you will always come closer to these boys when you are like them. They feel part of you,” he says.
But that is not all; Mogaka details that donning the green half sweaters and short-sleeved shirts makes him disguise himself as a student hence easily getting ‘intelligence’ information. As such, the matter has also made it effortless for him to narrow down on law-breakers.
Mogaka is deputised by two teachers. One is in charge of discipline and policy while the other handles academics and planning.
Academic Performance
Over the recent years, the school has not only posted exemplary results but has also maintained them albeit with minor deviations.
In the 2021 KCSE exam, Kisii school had an average point of 8.93 with 20 students scoring As while 83 achieved A minuses. This was a slight drop from an average of 9.02 points in 2020 results that saw 12 students score As while 97 had A minuses. The institution had a mean of 8.38 in 2019 and 7.6 in 2018 which was a drop from 8.2 in 2017.
