The construction of the new Nairobi Central Railway Station is set to begin in July.
This was after the final designs of the multi billion project were handed over to the government.
The project was designed by UK firm Atkins Global and unveiled by the UK Prime Minister’s G7 and G20 Sherpa Jonathan Black.
The project which will cost KSh 30 billion will be sponsored by the United Kingdom through a Public Private Partnership.
Speaking of the project, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said the project will be set up on 425 acres of land and it will be incorporated in the Nairobi integrated transport system.
The project is expected to be completed in three years.
“We have a lot of under utilitied land that we want to develop the railway city on. We want people to use this facility and enjoy seamless transportation,” Mainga said.
The deal was first agreed between President Uhuru and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a meeting in London two years ago.
Railway infrastructure will take the lion’s share at KSh 17.6 billion.
The first phase includes the Central Railway Station and a commercial complex with two towers of 5,000 square metres each.
