Fresh details have emerged showing how university students scammed parents upto KSh 4 million while claiming to be selling Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Three Egerton University students namely Kevin Anunda Mogaka, Francis Manyara Ogata and Bravin Osano Ombongi were on Monday, October 31 arraigned before Milimani Law Courts in connection with the examination fraud.
The three were charged with three counts of conspiring with intent to deceive the public, publication of false information and being in possession of stolen ID cards.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three were operating 15 accounts on WhatsApp and Telegram which they used to solicit money from unsuspecting victims.
They would demand between KSh 5,000 and KSh 35,000 and promise to send them examination papers.
By the time the three were arrested, they had collected KSh 4 million deposited in two bank accounts which has since been frozen.
They were also found in possession of several ATM cards, national identity cards, and SIM cards that did not belong to them.
Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) CEO David Njeng’ere has since warned students and parents from being duped.
He assured that examination materials are in safe custody ahead of the exams in a month.

KCPE 2022 will start on Monday, November 28 and end on Wednesday, November 30 2022.
KCSE examinations will begin on Friday, December 2, 2022, and run until December 23, 2022.
