Lucy Murage is a fashion designer responsible for outfits worn by KTN News anchors while presenting news.

She pursued a course in fashion design after failing to proceed to secondary school despite performing well due to lack of school fees.

Murage has been in the industry for over 22 years having started her own shop in 2000 after quitting employment.

Here is her story as told by WoK.

Background

Murage hails from Naromoru, Nyeri County where she was born and bred.

She attended Naromoru Primary School for her primary school education bus she was not able to proceed with her studies.

“My mother did not get money to take me to secondary school of which I was very much willing to go,” she said.

With no means of proceeding to secondary school, Murage notes that her mother offered to take her for a fashion design course.

“I didn’t know that it was in me, after I went to school, I realized that I had a gift in fashion design. I trained for six months and I was employed somewhere,” she stated.

While working, she was trained further and improved her skills, some three years before she left to start her own business.

“When I was employed, I tried my best and I bought my first machine and I started although it was very small,” she explained.

Murage worked from Naromoru town where she also ministered in local churches for over 15 years and she would get orders to make outfits for choir members.

“I used to minister in the churches and whenever I’d go they’d give me orders to make clothes for the choir and women groups. That’s how I grew,” she stated.

She relocated to Nairobi in 2012 where she got a chance to work with great minds in the media industry among other sectors.

Murage has dressed several KTN News anchors including Zubeida Koome, Ashley Mazuri, Trix Ingando and Cecilia Wakesho.

“They have been promoting me and through that I have been growing, they mademe have confidence in what I’m doing and I like it,” she said.

The fashion designer also attributes her success in the industry to her siblings whom she said are supportive.

“I love them, they’ve promoted me in this career,” she said.

On her love for fashion, Murage said.

“One thing that made me love it is because I didn’t have anything else to do and because I trusted God I prayed about it and that is now when I realized that when I do something, people love it.”
