Jane Muthoni: I Started My Shipping Business While Working As A Househelp In Belgium

By Prudence Minayo

Jane Muthoni Mureithi is a successful Kenyan businesswoman based in Belgium. She owns a shipping company called Jamrick Global Limited which ships goods from Belgium to Kenya. The growth of her company has been as a result of hard work and integrity.

She told Alex Chamwada that setting up a business in Belgium was not easy as a lot of regulations needed to be followed.

Here is her story as told by WoK.

Move to Belgium

She started going to Belgium in 1999 before officially moving there in 2003. Muthoni got married and settled in the country. At first, she did not know the language and to sustain herself she cleaned people houses.

She realized that in Belgium you cannot afford to be choosy with a job. There is nothing like a man’s and a woman’s job.

Jamrick Global

The idea to form Jamrick Global began to take shape when she realized how her appliances in Belgium would last longer than those in Kenya. She decided to start shipping her used appliances to Kenya and before long had a business going.

The entreprenuer did this for four years as she continued with her regular work.

Two containers per month

The businesswoman began shipping used goods to Kenya and steadily started building a loyal clientele.

She would get most of the goods during summer when most people in Belgium would dispose off their goods. She opened a yard in Pelt City where she would sort out goods before shipping them to Kenya.

Speaking to Chams Media, she said that she ships about two containers to Kenya on a monthly basis. The goods are imported to Kenya where they land at her Kenyan yard in Kasarani.

Dozens of clients always gather at the yard in preparation to inspect the goods they have ordered. She also has other outlets in Kisumu and Nyeri.

Some clients pre-order and she even ships for other Kenyans who want to send goods back home. She said one of the things that sell very well are utensils and shoes.

Jane Muthoni has lived in Belgium for over twenty years but has been in this business for ten years now.
