Comedian Terrence Creative and actress Awinja have been left angry by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).
KFCB sent the two Kenyan stars emails telling them they had failed to acquire the requisite licenses for filming and uploading audiovisual content on YouTube.
The board also wrote that it’s mandated to regulate the creation, broadcasting, possession, distribution and exhibition of film.
KFCB demanded the two comply and acquire the licenses or face legal proceedings in the next 14 days.
Awinja had recently released the Disco Matanga film which she uploaded on YouTube.
Disco Matanga became a hit and has got hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.
The actress responded to KFCB and decried their continued red tape.
“Yani the Moment there have been Increased Positive Content Creation, Job Creation and International Recognition, KFCB mnafufuka,”
“The fact that you have not even considered a sit down with Content Creators, you’ve just gone straight to RED-TAPING us, says so much about your intentions,” Awinja said.
Terence on the other hand shared his surprise after getting the KFCB email.
The comedian said his YouTube film was meant to educate people about falling into scammers traps.
The popular Wash Wash short films increased Terence’s popularity across Kenya and beyond.
“Aki washwash si ukweli ni kipindi tu mi hufanya kuhamasisha wakenya wasiibiwe……ni acting tu aki….VIRTU mingi hapo ni za kutag watu,” Terence said.
Makarios Onyango Ouma popularly known as Mwafreeka also called out KFCB for their demands.
In an angry rant on his YouTube channel and statement on social media seen by WoK, Mwafreeka termed the KFCB move as nonsense.
“Hii ni ujinga KFCB so I gotta ask Dennis Itumbi what was the US trip all about if we need licences to operate YouTube, Instagram and TikTok? Even Afghanistan does not require a license but Kenya now does,” he asked.
