KTN has claimed that the government is planning to shut it down as county grapples with anti-finance bill protests.
In a statement on Tuesday June 25, the TV station said it would not cowed by the threats and would continue to defend the public interest.
“Now in the wake of our detailed coverage of the ongoing protest against the Finance Bill 2024 that has been organised by Gen Z protesters who would like to inform our viewers that we have received threats from authorities of intentions to shut us down,”
“We would like to inform the public of our commitment to defend the public interest and we shall not be cowed by any threats.”The statement read.
The threats on KTN comes as other major Kenyan media outlets have covered the demonstrations against the Finance Bill.
The Occupy Parliament protests, have seen hundreds of thousands of Kenyans, especially the youth march in streets in Nairobi and across the country.
On Tuesday, June 25, protests took a dramatic turn as protesters entered Parliament with several reported dead after being shot by security officers.
KTN was among the TV stations that reported live the breach of Parliament by the protesters.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has warned the alleged ploters of the Occupy Parliament protests.
Ruto said its his constitutional responsibility to protect Kenya’s constitutional order.
The President termed the breach of Parliament and the damage done by as a treasonous act.
“Today events mark a critical point on how we respond to threats to our peace,”
“We will ensure a situation of this nature does nor recur again.” He said.
