How to Block Safaricom SIM Swap

SIM swapping is a type of identity theft in which an attacker takes control of a victim’s phone number and gains access to their online accounts that use phone number-based authentication.

The process of SIM swapping involves convincing a victim’s mobile phone carrier to transfer their phone number to a new SIM card controlled by the attacker.

This can be achieved by social engineering techniques, such as impersonating the victim and providing personal information, or by exploiting vulnerabilities in the carrier’s customer service procedures.

Once the attacker gains control of the victim’s phone number, they can receive any calls or texts intended for the victim, including two-factor authentication codes sent by online services.

This allows the attacker to reset passwords and gain access to the victim’s online accounts, such as email, banking and social media

However, the good news is that mobile service providers such as Safaricom have worked on ways to effectively block SIM swapping from happening.

You can prevent the SIM swap by dialling *100*100# from your Safaricom number.

You will receive the following message; Your number can only be replaced by visiting the nearest Safaricom Shop/Care Desk with your ID.
