Eric Muriithi Muga: A Look at the Decorated Career of 32-Year-Old Picked For Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS Position

President William Ruto nominated the first batch of Cabinet Secretaries to his government on Friday, July 19.

Among those called upon to serve in Ruto’s administration is 32-year-old Eric Muriithi Muuga who was nominated to become Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary.

Muuga alongside 11 others will be vetted by the Committee on Appointments at the National Assembly before being sworn-in as CSs for their respective dockets.

But who is Muuga? Here is what WoK has managed to dig out about the CS nominee.

Early life

Mugaa was born on July 14, 1992.

He attended St. Johns Boarding Primary School in Maua, and sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2005, scoring 431 marks.

Following his impressive performance, Muuga joined Lenana School in Nairobi where he spent four years – 2006 to 2009.

After completing his secondary school education, he joined the University of Nairobi (UoN) where he took up a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Construction Engineering and had a first-class honour.

Mugaa proceeded to do a master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) at UoN and graduated in 2022.

Work experience

Muuga has eight years’ experience in Operations and Management of Engineering Projects, Water Hydraulic Modeling, Design of Water and Wastewater Networks and Water Treatment Plants and other water structures.

He has served as an assistant Project Engineer at the Water and Sanitation Development Project (WSDP).

Additionally, Muuga was assistant Project Engineer at KIMAWASCO and Design Engineer at the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water and Supply Sanitation Program.

He was also the design engineer in the Kenya Sustainable Town Water Supply and Sanitation Program.

Muuga Jim served as an assistant engineer during Feasibility Study & Preparation of Water Supply Masterplan for Murang’a County in 2019.

Between 2018 July and March 2019, he was a design engineer during Preparation of Detailed Design, ESIA/RAP and Tender Documents for Water Distribution Works for Mombasa and 3 Water Service Providers.

Muuga has also taken part in last mile connectivity works for Narok: Kabarnet and Marigat Towns and Kabartonjo and Chemolingon Urban Centres.

Most importantly, he is a registered Graduate Engineer with Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

Voluntary work

According to Kenyan Times, in his early years, muuga is said to have worked as a volunteer teacher at Kirindine Day Secondary School-Meru County between May 2010 and July 2011.

He taught Mathematics, Physics, Business Studies and Geography.

Muuga also had a stint with the Kenya Red Cross Society – UoN Chapter 2015 focusing on activities including offering basic first AID services during local events and participating in voluntary Street cleaning around Nairobi.
