Kenya’s marathon icon, Eliud Kipchoge’s dream for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal has been shattered at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Kipchoge started by leading a group of 14 athletes.
Sadly, the 39-year-old’s dream of immortality was ended as he fell off the pace just at the halfway mark of the race.
With 25 kilometres to go, Kipchoge sat in 63rd place.
Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the gold medal in the marathon in a time of 2:04:00.
This was the first time Tola had won a gold medal in the Olympics.
Kenya’s Benson Kipruto clinched bronze while Belgium’s Bashir Abdi finished second for silver.
In an interview with Olympics.com, Kipchoge said it’s tough being at the top.
For 11 years now, the marathon has been the focus of Kipchoge’s life.
The two-time world record holder accomplished an incredible 10-race unbeaten streak in major marathons between 2014 and 2019.
“It’s tough being at the top… You need to have the sixth sense for you to stay at the top.” He said.
Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence on the death of fellow athlete Kelvin Kiptum.
Kipchoge says he received criticism and death threats after Kiptum’s tragic car accident.
Kiptum, the world record holder was tipped to challenge Kipchoge’s dominance in the marathon.
When news of his death broke some social media users started speculating the legendary Kipchoge had a hand in his accident.
Kipchoge in an interview with BBC, said people threatened to harm him, his family and businesses.
