It’s Already in Their Accounts: Total Amount of Money Ruto Awarded Athletes With Paris 2024 Medals

President William Ruto has honored the athletes who represented Kenya at the Paris 2024 Olympics, despite facing adverse commentary.

During a breakfast meeting at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday, August 15, the Head of State presented a total of Ksh 19.75 million to the team in recognition of their remarkable accomplishments.

Kenya ranked as the 17th best-performing nation worldwide and led the African continent by winning 11 medals—four gold, two silver and five bronze.

Speaking while addressing the athletes, Ruto expressed his pride in the achievements of the team without reservation.

“You did not disappoint. I am very proud this morning, almost emotional, that these sportsmen and women are making our country great,” he said.

Beatrice Chebet topped the honours list, receiving Ksh 6 million for her remarkable accomplishment of securing two gold medals.

Her triumphs in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters events have not only brought her national acclaim but also resulted in her promotion to the rank of Corporal within the National Police Service.

Faith Kipyegon, another prominent athlete from the Paris 2024 Olympics, was awarded Ksh 5 million.

Kipyegon excelled by winning gold in the 1,500 meters and silver in the 5,000 meters, solidifying her position as one of Kenya’s leading sports figures.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi, at the age of 20, received Ksh 3 million for his groundbreaking victory in the 800 meters.

Wanyonyi’s achievement made him the youngest Olympic champion in the history of this event, earning him commendation from the President.

Ronald Kwemoi, who earned a silver medal in the men’s 5,000 meters event, received a monetary award of Ksh 2 million.

Other medalists, such as Benson Kipruto, Abraham Kibiwot, Mary Moraa, Hellen Obiri and Faith Cherotich, were each granted Ksh 750,000 in recognition of their contributions to Kenya’s overall medal count.

Additionally, the athletes are eligible for a local allowance of Ksh 3,000 per day while in training, as well as a daily allowance of approximately Ksh38,400 when competing abroad.
