For centuries, the quest for better opportunities abroad has remained a perennial pursuit, but due to varying circumstances, some individuals achieve success while others face challenges in adapting.
The Moturi family represents a small fraction that has discovered a lucrative opportunity and established a dependable source of income.
Silas Moturi and his spouse, Debbie Moturi, emigrated in the early 2000s with their three-year-old son, Nathan Ondeyo.
Over the years, the family has explored various business ventures, with their most recent endeavor being the Black Brew Company located in Weslaco, Texas.
This enterprise is owned by Ondeyo, who operates it with the assistance of his parents, who are also engaged in other business activities.
The Black Brew Company specializes in coffee production and aims to provide customers with high-quality Kenyan products.
“My family made sure that I was exposed to our true heritage despite growing up in a predominantly Hispanic area,” he shared.
Nearly two years following its inauguration, the establishment has emerged as the focal point of the community.
This enterprise transcends the typical coffee shop experience by offering patrons complimentary books to enjoy.
Ondeyo has been actively engaged in online research and has traveled to Kenya and Colombia to deepen his understanding of the coffee industry.
“I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and great mentors with my parents teaching me all there is to run a business,’ Ondeyo said.
In addition to the coffee enterprise, Ondeyo’s father operates a homecare facility known as Donna Assisted Living in Donna, while his mother serves as a nursing instructor at Texas State Technical College.
