Dr. Edwin Bogonko: Kisii Native Becomes First African to Head Minnesota Medical Association

Dr. Edwin Bogonko, a physician of Kenyan descent, has achieved a remarkable milestone by being elected as the 158th president of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA).

This landmark appointment is historic, as it represents the first instance in the 170-year history of the organization that an individual of color has taken on this leadership position.

Bogonko’s election highlights his unwavering dedication to healthcare and his extensive contributions to the MMA.

Hailing from Kisii in southwestern Kenya, his journey into medicine was shaped by personal experiences, particularly the heart condition of his younger brother, which required numerous hospital visits and sparked his desire to pursue a medical career.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Bogonko recalls the unnecessary suffering he witnessed due to a lack of medical professionals.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Nairobi in 1993, he practiced in Kenya until 1999, when he moved to the United States.

There, Bogonko continued his commitment to serving vulnerable communities.

His association with the MMA began in 2010, where he quickly became a vital member, participating in various committees and taking on leadership roles.

Bogonko’s dedication culminated in his tenure as Chair of the MMA’s Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2023, which ultimately led to his presidential appointment.

The Director of Communication and Education for the MMA, Dan Hauser, commends Bogonko for his active involvement and amicable nature.

The unanimous election of Bogonko underscores the extensive support he receives from his colleagues.

As the primary spokesperson for the MMA, he is tasked with advocating for physicians at the State Capitol and promoting policies that aim to improve healthcare throughout Minnesota.

During his inauguration at the MMA’s Empowering Physicians Conference in Minneapolis, Bogonko articulated several key priorities for his tenure.

These priorities include curbing the misuse of prior authorization, enhancing physician well-being, fortifying rural healthcare systems, broadening mental health services, and safeguarding elderly patients from having to choose between medical care and essential needs.

Beyond his responsibilities with the MMA, Bogonko is also engaged in community efforts focused on improving health outcomes for underserved populations.

His comprehensive approach to healthcare prioritizes addressing the underlying causes of health disparities and fostering overall wellness.
