Parents
Nicki was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad to Robert and Carol Maraj. When she was three, her parents moved to New York City, leaving her with her grandmother, but they brought her to Queens when she was five.

Carol, who is also a gospel singer, would pray for Nicki and offer guidance when Nicki called her with problems.
