Douglas Kanja is the current and 5th Inspector General of police after taking over from the short-lived tenure of Japheth Koome.
The IG of police has served in law enforcement for 39 years and counting. In this article, WoK looks at his education background.
Academic qualifications
The 61 year IG started his education journey at Njatheini Primary School from 1972 to 1978.
The former deputy inspector of police went on to complete his ‘A’ at Murang’a High School in 1984. Immediately after his A levels, Kanja was recruited to the General Service Unit starting out as a police constanble.
In between his illustrious career, the officer pursued a diploma in Security Management and Police Studies at Kenyatta University. He graduated in 2014.
He took another course that seemed at odds with his career. He studied Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the defunct Inoorero University.
Asked during his vetting why he took a course in commerce, he answered,
“When I rose to the rank of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, I was also aspiring for higher levels in terms of commandant leadership of the service so I opted for a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Finance option,” he revealed.
