A secret meeting between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga in Kilifi has stirred debate, fueling speculation about the future of the anticipated political cooperation between Raila and President William Ruto.
A widely shared photo online captures Uhuru walking alongside Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, while another image shows the county chief engaged in conversation with Raila and Uhuru’s close confidant, David Murathe.
Though details of their discussions remain undisclosed, political analysts believe the meeting could have centered around Raila’s expected handshake with President Ruto—a move that would signal a major political shift.
Was Uhuru seeking a role in this potential alliance, or was he cautioning Raila against forging deeper ties with Ruto?
Political commentator Herman Manyora dismisses the idea that the former president is after a government position.
“Uhuru is beyond such things. What would he want, money, power? He already has everything he needs. The constitution doesn’t allow him to seek more power, and he doesn’t even need protection, the Kenyatta name is enough,” Manyora remarked.
However, he speculates that Uhuru may not be comfortable with Raila’s growing association with Ruto.
“It can be Uhuru has never been happy with Raila working with Ruto, I am not sure, but I am suspecting heavily that Uhuru cannot be happy seeing Raila working with Ruto. I think Uhuru would still want Raila to make one more attempt with his support,” he added.
As political tensions simmer, the outcome of these behind-the-scenes maneuvers could shape Kenya’s political landscape in the coming months.
