Muhoho Kenyatta believes that the biggest mistake new entrepreneurs make is spending their first profits instead of reinvesting them.
You may recognize him as the younger brother of Kenya’s fourth president, Uhuru Kenyatta.
He is also the current CEO of Brookside Dairy and one of the largest shareholders in NCBA Group, owning 227.3 million shares which are worth approximately ksh 20 billion.
In a recent impromptu interview on Young Millionaire Talks, Muhoho shared nuggets of wisdom on how young people can start and scale their businesses.
According to him, a good business starts with a good idea, although one must also dedicate themselves and focus on their goals.
“You need to have an idea, then focus. Keep your head down and know that nothing comes overnight. Success comes through hard work and grinding for long periods,” he said.
His advice to young people is for them to look for positive energy and stay away from circles of people who have negative energy or who are trying to distract them.
Even when networking, Muhoho stated that it is important for one to network in the right circles; otherwise, you will be wasting your time.
However, he cautioned that not everyone can become an entrepreneur.
“Business is only one aspect of life. There are people who are good at business while others are not. I don’t think everybody should be an entrepreneur. Look for your true North and focus on where you want to go,” he said.
He added that sometimes people who would have excelled in corporate spaces often give up their potential to open small businesses that make no headway.
According to him, there are plenty of other careers that people should focus on, instead of thinking that starting a business is the beginning and end of life.
For those who have chosen the path of business, Muhoho said that growth is a matter of reinvesting and compounding.
“Don’t think that the day you make your first profit is the day you should start celebrating, or buy your first big car. No. You have to keep reinvesting your business proceeds, following the principle of compounding,” he said.
Muhoho, who has mastered the art of keeping a low public profile, co-founded Brookside Dairy in 1993. His leadership has seen the company grow to become East Africa’s largest dairy processor.
In December 2025, NCBA Group appointed Muhoho as a non-executive director, citing his extensive experience in leading and developing businesses across East Africa for more than three decades
Aside from business, Muhoho is rumoured to have played a key part in several major political affiliations in Kenya.
For instance, he is said to have catalyzed the merger of former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party and the United Republican Party (URP), which was led by current president William Ruto ahead of the 2013 elections.
He also orchestrated the earth-shaking political handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Muhoho’s educational accolades include a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Economics and Political Science, which he acquired from Williams College, Massachusetts, USA.
He also holds a Pan-African Advanced Management Programme Certification.
