Amin Mohammed Ibrahim is the current director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in Kenya. He took office in 2022, following George Kinoti’s resignation.

Amin was sworn in after outgunning 9 candidates who were interviewed by the National Police Service for the position.

This is his career profile, as told by WoK:

Education

Prior to his appointment as DCI boss, Amin Mohammed was pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Criminology and Security Management at Egerton University.

He holds a degree in Criminology and Security Studies from the same University and a diploma in International Studies from the University of Nairobi.

He is also a first-class honors certificate graduate from the National Defense College. On his resume, he states his hobbies as reading, sports, training, and leadership.

Decorated Career

Mr. Amin, who is 59 years old, joined the police force as a cadet from Kiganjo Police Training College in 1989. He was immediately appointed to head the crime wing of Bungoma Police Station.

Through upgrading his education and a stellar career performance, he slowly climbed the ranks to join the DCI in the early 2000s.

His achievements as an investigator include investigating former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza over her threatening to Kill a security guard in 2012.

Amin also investigated and prosecuted the Killers of Luigi Locati, the Italian Bishop who was murdered in 2005.

By 2007, he was the police regional commander of Rift Valley, the scene of the historic tribal clashes.

Leadership

His administrative stints include serving as director for the Kenya National Focal Point on Small and Light weapons. He was at one time the head of investigations at DCI and senior superintendent at the Anticorruption Police Unit.

Before being the DCI boss, Amin was head of the internal affairs unit at the National police service. He had also worked at the CID and the Banking Fraud Investigation unit, where he reportedly occupied senior positions.

His impressive CV and scandal-free career spanning decades were what gave him an edge over 9 other candidates who had been shortlisted for the DCI boss position.

One of his first moves after taking office was disbanding the Anti-Counterfeit Unit that had been formed by his predecessor George Kinoti. This move came barely days after he disbanded the Special Service Unit (SSU).

During his swearing-in, he gave out his mobile number for members of the public to easily reach out to him. The number he gave out was 0722415419.

As DCI boss, Amin Mohammed is among the most powerful men in the country. He heads the Special Crime Prevention Unit, Banking Fraud Investigations Unit, the Anti-Narcotics Unit, Bomb and Hazardous Disposal Unit, the Anti-terrorism Police Unit, and the Cybercrime Investigation Unit.

His colleagues describe him as a media-shy but smart investigator who loves reading. His office is located at Mazingira House along Kiambu Road.
