Amount of Money Parents Will Pay as University Fees in New Funding Model

The Ministry of Education has provided clarification regarding the newly introduced university funding model.

Over the past few days, the new funding model has elicited significant reactions from the Kenyan populace.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala disclosed that the funding model is categorized into five bands based on the income level of families.

The band to which a student is assigned is determined by the income figure reported by the applicant during the scholarship application process

Band One

Band One, representing the most financially disadvantaged group, includes families with an income not exceeding Ksh 5,995.

In this category, the government scholarship will cover 70 percent of the tuition fees, while a loan will account for 25 percent, resulting in a total financial support of 95 percent.

Consequently, the family is responsible for only 5 percent of the fees, and the student will be eligible for an upkeep loan from Helb amounting to Ksh 60,000.

Band Two

In Band Two, the government has categorized families with an income that does not exceed Ksh 23,670 but is above Ksh 5,995.

Within this classification, the government scholarship will finance 60 percent of the fees, while a loan will account for 30 percent.

The family is responsible for covering 10 percent of the total fees.

Additionally, students in this band will be eligible for an upkeep loan of Ksh 55,000.

Band Three

In Band Three, families with an income that does not surpass Ksh 70,000 but is above Ksh 23,670 have been classified.

In this category, the government scholarship will provide 50 percent of the fees, with a loan covering 30 percent.

Families will need to contribute 20 percent of the fees. Students in this band will receive an upkeep loan of Ksh 50,000.

Band Four

In Band Four, families earning no more than Ksh 120,000 but above Ksh 70,000 are grouped.

Here, the government scholarship will cover 40 percent of the fees, while a loan will account for 30 percent.

Families will be required to pay 30 percent of the fees.

Band Five

In Band Five, families with an income exceeding Ksh 120,000 are classified.

In this category, families will pay 30 percent of the fees, receive a loan for 30 percent, and will be responsible for covering 40 percent of the fees.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced on Friday that students who are dissatisfied with their assigned bands may submit an appeal through the Higher Education Portal.
