Kamaki’s Place is a popular restaurant along the Eastern Bypass which has, over the years, risen to become one of the best nyama choma joints.
The joint was established in 2008 as a small butchery but two years later, it had grown to become a go-to place for meat.
They also sold liquor for guests who wanted to unwind.
But how did Kamaki’s Place come to be and who is the owner of the popular eatery?
Here is what WoK has gathered about the same.
According to a report on Nation, Kamakis was undeveloped with shrubs and sisals scattered all over by the time the restaurant was set up.
With business booming, other investors came in and put up establishments around the area, shortly before residential buildings were built.
Anthony Maina, also known as Doctor is the current owner of Kamaki’s Place, having leased it from the original owner.
Maina who previously worked as an employee roasting meat at the eatery took over the business in 2017.
“The owner wanted to leave in 2017, and instead of closing shop, he chose to lease it. Having worked here for two years, I decided to take over. I had hoped to reap big too,” he said.
Although the first three years after taking over the business was doing good, he started experiencing a steady fall in the number of customers.
He attributed this to establishment of modern clubs in the area and people moving to less-congested areas.
As if that was not enough, the COVID-19 pandemic struck and by the time the economy re-opened, there were new development in the area.
“It started with one club, then two, three and so on. Structures were being demolished. New and modern highrise building were being put up in their place,” he said.
Kamakis area has experienced exponential growth since 2020.
Establishments in the area include three supermarkets, six petrol stations, four banks and several eateries including Art Café outlets, KFC, Galitos, Chicken/Pizza Inn and Jajamelo pizza.
The area has also hosted a number of private schools, major hardware stores, real estate firms, furniture and electronics outlets, beauty parlours and barbershops.
