Bob Mwiti is the founder of the International Scholars Program.
Recently, he expressed his gratitude to his mathematics teacher by sponsoring a trip for him to America, acknowledging the significant role the teacher played in his success.
Furthermore, the mathematics teacher currently holds the position of Field Team Supervisor within Mwiti’s organization.
In an open conversation with Chams Media, Gideon Muriuki, Mwiti’s former mathematics teacher, shared that this trip marked his first experience traveling abroad, a gesture made possible by his former student.
“It will be my first time out of Kenya. So it will be a historical event for me in my lifetime,” he shared.
Muriuki commenced his mathematics teaching career in 1984 at Gikumene.
Mwiti first encountered him in nursery school and consistently sought Muriuki’s guidance during his primary education.
“I was a very good student generally and I think maths was my favourite subject. He used to support me a lot…sometimes you do extra assignments and I would take to him and he would look at them. He really supported me and he was one of those teachers who was interested in seeing me succeed,” he shared.
Their strong bond greatly influenced Mwiti’s success with the teacher describing Mwiti as smart, obedient, and eager to learn.
“One of the things that I actually remember very well is that when I passed my KCPE, I was among the top students in Meru County. I got an opportunity to study at Nairobi school but I couldn’t due to my humble background. He took the initiative to look for a school for me and I ended up going to Nkubu High School in Meru County,” he added.
Mwiti reminisced humorously about his first day of school, recalling how his math teacher noticed his tattered shoes and generously provided him with a new pair.
Such small gestures significantly contributed to Bob’s development and were instrumental in his pursuit of education in the United States.
In 2018, he initiated the International Scholars Program after encountering several visa denials for his master’s degree.
Upon his arrival in the U.S., he secured a position as an IT analyst, engaging in projects for some of the nation’s largest corporations.
Muriuki found himself on a fully funded tour across the United States, where he and Bob traveled through various states, including Florida, Atlanta, North Carolina, and Virginia, and visited renowned landmarks such as the White House and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
“Mwiti is doing an amazing job in that he is giving back to the community. I have witnessed him pay school fees for the needy at Nkubu Secondary School,” Muriuki said.
