Kenyan comedian YY has narrated the struggles he has gone through when starting comedy.

YY in an emotional interview with the Mic Cheque podcast said he faced struggles and painful sacrifices to be where he is now.

An emotional YY cried during the interview when he revealed some of his relatives, including his uncle, never believed that he could make it with comedy.

YY said he promised he would prove them wrong.

The comedian said he wanted people to respect his mother and for her to live a good life.

“Bro, one of the reasons I worked hard was for people to treat my mom with respect… I have seen a lot, and my mom has carried so many burdens on my behalf… My mom has been told words for things that I did that she did not tell me to do,”

“And so I always wanted people to be like Pale ni kwa kina YY, and you know what? You have to put some respect on that name, and I’m glad when people say, Wewe ulifika usalimiangi watu, and I am like, Yeah, mama yangu alifika.” YY said.

YY said he didn’t let his uncle’s harsh words stop him from pursuing his dreams.

“There’s this uncle of mine who told me, Hakuna chance yenye huyu jamaa ana…… This guy is a thief, and he is going to be shot soon, Juu sikuwahi onekana kwa TV show ya Churchill,”

“I kept doing my thing, and then the time came ya come kwa TV inajileta tuh yenyewe now that Aibu came back to my uncle. I got promoted to the main show, and the rest is history,” he added.

In July 2021, former Churchill Show comedian and events host Oliver Otieno, alias YY took to social media to flaunt a house that he built for his mother.

Taking to Facebook, the comic unveiled the house he has been constructing for his mum.

YY also shared a photo showing his mother seated on a chair without cushions inside a house built with iron sheets and a mud floor.

In the first photo, the comic’s mother sat on a one-seater wooden chair, without cushions, just to show the level of poverty they were facing at the time.
