The national examiner will be forced to reschedule examinations for all levels of learning if the coronavirus threat persists for another three months, reports the Standard. Already, the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec), has cancelled the April certificate and diploma examinations for early childhood development and special needs education.
Acting KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Karogo said of the cancellation:
“Knec wishes to inform you that the 2020 ECDE proficiency, certificate and diploma examinations scheduled to take place between April 12-16 and the diploma in special needs examinations scheduled for April 12-23 have been postponed until further notice”
Learners in primary and secondary schools will have to repeat classes if the projections of an increase in Covid-19 cases become a reality. Authorities are in the process of identifying 20 boarding schools to host coronavirus patients in the eventuality the numbers increase. This means candidates will have to wait until 2021 to sit for their national exams.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Secretary-General Akello Misori said the exams can wait until the pandemic is checked:
“It will not be business as usual and learning can be postponed for a year. This pandemic is as ambiguous as it is in the rest of the world. Exams test a curriculum based on completion of syllabus. If it is not covered, what will they be testing?” said Akello.
