In 2020, Mukurweini Wakulima Dairy and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology’s Institute of Food Bioresources Technology, IFBT, partnered to produce a unique yogurt.

The two entities joined hands to make coffee-flavoured yoghurt in a bid to produce a more nutritious drink and help boost coffee farmers.

The Royal Fresh Coffee Flavoured Yoghurt was introduced to the market in December 2020.

Here is the story as told by WoK.

Speaking in an interview with Nation, IFBT director Eddy Owaga noted that the process used in the extraction of coffee enhances the flavour of the yoghurt.

The process produces a unique coffee aroma giving the drink a sweet, long pleasant aftertaste while consuming it.

He added that the process also amplifies anti-oxidative and antimicrobial properties found in the drink.

While the yoghurt contains no synthetic additives, the extracts are mainly from AA, AB and PB premium grades.

DeKUT lecturer Paul Sang says yogurt is a highly-nutritious and easily digestible dairy product.

He notes that it is a rich source of protein, minerals and vitamins and improves gut health and immune system.

“Growing competition and consumer awareness on safe food products has led to increased research and innovations on foods with highest quality that meets customer expectations in terms of nutritional and flavour properties,” Sang explained.

Other than producing coffee flavoured yoghurt, they also offer other variants of the products including strawberry, vanilla, chia and bamboo.

Benefits of yoghurt

Yogurt is an excellent source of protein, with about 10 grams per cup.

This makes it a great snack or meal option for people who are looking to increase their protein intake.

Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues in the body, and it also helps to keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria known as probiotics, which help to promote a healthy gut microbiome.

These bacteria can help to improve digestion, boost the immune system, and even reduce the risk of certain diseases.

Some studies have suggested that consuming yogurt regularly can help to lower cholesterol levels, particularly LDL cholesterol.

This is likely due to the fact that yogurt contains certain compounds that can help to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the gut.

Yogurt is also a great source of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth.

One cup of yogurt can provide up to 30% of your daily calcium needs.

This is particularly important for people who are at risk of osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle.
