Former U.S President Donald Trump has survived an assassination attempt after a shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Sunday, 14.

Secret Service agents rushed Trump off stage after the gunshots erupted.

A video footage showed Trump grimace and raise a hand to his right ear, before ducking as shots were heard.

The former president was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents and rushed off stage to a waiting car.

Trump raised a fist as he was bundled into the vehicle.

“The shooter was dead, one rally attendee was killed and two other spectators were injured,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

The shooting at the rally occurred less than four months before the November 5 election.

Trump faces an election rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden.

Hours after the shooting, Trump took to his Truth social media account and said the bullet had pierced the upper part of his right ear.

“Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,”

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

According to Al Jazeera, as a former president and current presumptive presidential nominee for a major political party, Trump gets the same kind of protection from the US Secret Service that a sitting president receives.

Attendees of a Trump rally must go through a metal detector and measures similar to airport security.
