Faith Kipyegon showcased her dominance by winning the 1500 meters at the inaugural women-only Athlos meet in New York City, clocking a time of 4:04.79.

This event, founded by Alexis Ohanian, featured a substantial prize pool aimed at elevating women’s athletics, with Kipyegon competing against top athletes like Susan Ejore and Gudaf Tsegay.

Her victory adds to an impressive season, including Olympic gold and multiple Diamond League wins.

The event highlighted Kipyegon’s status as a leading figure in women’s sports.

Winners of each event pocketed Ksh 7.7 million which is twice the prize money offered at the Diamond League finale.

The Athlos meet, held on September 26, 2024, at New York City’s Icahn Stadium, marked a significant milestone in women’s athletics.

The inaugural event was designed to elevate female track and field athletes through unprecedented prize money, entertainment, and a focus on empowerment.

Athlos distinguished itself by offering over $500,000 in total prize money, with winners receiving $60,000—double the typical amount in major meets.

Additionally, 10% of the event’s revenue was distributed among all participating athletes, ensuring broader financial support for competitors.

The event featured an all-female lineup across various events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m races.

Beyond athletics, Athlos emphasized the celebration of femininity.

Athletes enjoyed pampering experiences such as makeup sessions and professional photo shoots—luxuries rarely afforded at traditional meets.

This approach fostered an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie rather than the usual pressure associated with competition.

Ohanian’s vision for Athlos stemmed from his belief that women’s sports have been historically undervalued.

He aimed to change this narrative by creating a platform that not only showcased elite competition but also celebrated the athletes’ achievements in a supportive environment.

The event was inspired by the success of women’s soccer and other sports that have gained visibility and popularity in recent years.

Athlos featured impressive performances from top athletes like Kipyegon, who won the 1500 meters in 4:04.79, and Brittany Brown, who stunned audiences by defeating Olympic champion Gabby Thomas in the 200 meters.

The competitive spirit was palpable as athletes pushed each other to excel while enjoying the unique experience Athlos offered.
