Gabreire A Group (GAG): Kenyan Company Awarded Multibillion-Dollar Tender to Construct First Toll Road in Madagascar

On Friday, May 10, 2024, GAG was awarded a Ksh130 billion tender to build the Antananarivo-Toamasina toll Road that is set to run from Antananarivo to Toamasina in Madagascar.

Speaking during the event, Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano underscored Kenya’s ability to export industrial and investment services across the world.

“Today marks a momentous occasion as I join Gabreire A Group (GAG), a Kenyan company, in celebrating a significant milestone in African infrastructure development. We commemorate the beginning of construction for a multibillion-dollar project—a 250 km road to bitumen standard, linking Antananarivo to Toamasina in Madagascar,” the CS stated.

Gabreire A Group (GAG) secured the contract after successful bidding for this monumental project, valued at US$1 billion (Ksh130 billion) and funded by the World Bank.

“This achievement underscores Kenya’s prowess and capability in infrastructure development and investment expertise,” Miano lauded.

The project would be the first toll road in Madagascar. It would reduce the distance between Antananarivo and Toamasina by 110 kilometers, and as a result, the cost of transport too.

CS Miano noted that the project would create employment in both Kenya and Madagascar and to an extent, foster inter Africa trade.

“In light of this major achievement and many others, the Kenya Kwanza Government is indeed resolute in its promise and commitment to spearhead local firms like GAG that is located in Kenya, across the African region, and beyond by developing a conducive business environment in the region,” she said.

“Additionally, this road project has a great impact on the three interconnected regions of Kenya, Madagascar, and Africa in general. It is also a testament to the power of collaborative innovation, and determination in developing and molding Africa’s future by bolstering the infrastructural objectives of the African Union, such as the Trans-African Corridors,” CS Miano added.

The road is also a testament to the growing strength in ties between African states.
