Gor Mahia, fondly referred to as K’ogalo (house of Kogalo) by its legion of fans, is the most successful club in Kenya. The club has dominated the local premier league with a record 17 wins, four more than their arch-rivals AFC Leopards. Further to being the only football club from Kenya to have won Africa Winners’ Cup in 1987, K’ogalo boasts of winning FKF President’s Cup 10 consecutive times among other accolades.

Gor was formally inaugurated on 17th February, 1968. The team’s initially consisted of players from Luo Sports Club and those of Luo Union after they merged. In the same year, true to their calling, Gor Mahia triumphed in the national league for the very first time. And here is the icing on the cake; K’ogalo is the only team to have played a club from the English Premier League in Kenya. In 2017, Gor played an Everton team that had the likes of Wayne Rooney in Tanzania. Although K’ogalo was downed 2-1, the lads gave a good account of themselves.

How football is run in Kenya is a case study of how to waste talent and run down an otherwise successful club. Cases of players going without pay and allowances is a running theme even for a team like Gor. The team was expectedly bundled out of the CAF Confederation Cup after players were treated to shambolic preparations hours to the crucial game against RS Berkane. Photos of Gor players sleeping at the Doha International Airport waiting lounges hours to the game against the Morocco outfit was an indictment to the management of the team. Sportspesa is Gor’s main sponsor.

Ambrose Rachier-Club Chairman
He is the man at the helm of Gor. In the past, Rachier has promised to improve players allowances and bonuses. And how much are K’ogalo players paid?
