The pressure for a school to be a top performer squarely lies with the principal. He is a leader and how he manages his teachers, students and auxiliary staff determines the overall performance of a school. When Starehe Boys Centre was under the stewardship of Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin , it consistently produced top students in Kenya. With his demise also came the demise of what was one of the best schools in Kenya. It’s not uncommon for students and the community to hold demonstrations when a principal is transferred- especially those who have excelled. So how much are these administrators paid?

We take a look at how much a high school principal takes home every month.
Teachers in Kenya have always been agitating for better pay through the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT ) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet). The seemingly endless teachers’ strikes have at times crippled learning in the country. To curtail this and pacify the teachers, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) signed an attractive collective Bargain Agreements (CBAs) with Kuppet and Knut for the period 2017-2022 that would see their salaries go up. Principals are big time beneficiaries in this new arrangement.

Previously teachers were graded from G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q and R which has changed to B5, C1, C2, C3,C4,C5,D1, D2, D3,D4 and D5-from the lowest to the highest.

Principals who fall under group M and N will be collapsed under the new job group D3.

Salaries for principals under job group D3
