Uber driving is one of the most lucrative hustles in the job market today, as it is one of the most flexible gigs that guarantee a high return and best of all, it comes with autonomy as you can be your own boss and can control your work environment.

The beauty of venturing into this venture is that you do need to own your personal car to start. Becoming a driver for the cab-hailing service is a straight-forward process, with a few requirments to meet eligibility.

Here is how you can join the business without a personal car:

1. Sign Up Online

Begin by downloading the Uber App on your mobile phone and once loaded into your device,  search for the Uber business in your area.

You will be then required to sign up for Uber Kenya. On the next screen , enter your email address and complete the sign-up process. Ensure that your email is valid and functional.

After this your business is successfully registered.

2.  Meet Eligibility Qualifications

Uber driver requirements are pretty standard and to start, you must meet certain minimum requirements.

You should be over 18 years old and have an ID card. You also need to have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Ensure that you have an insurance cover and a vehicle that complies with Uber’s car requirements.

3. Getting A Car

Uber requires for a car working as a cab to meet the following requirements:

  • ‌The car must be in good condition and have a valid registration.
  • ‌The car must be of a model made in the year 2012 and above.
  • ‌The car should have four doors and a working rearview mirror, seat belts for every passenger, seat covers, a working speedometer, a working odometer and an insurance certificate.

You should have the following vehicle documents : Motor vehicle registration book, PSV insurance, Vehicle inspection report, Business permit and Partner National ID.

1. Uber Partner Rentals
Uber teams up with car rental companies in Kenya that offer vehicles for rideshare drivers. A good example of a company that collaborate with Uber is Kia Kenya which offers vehicles specifically for Uber drivers in Kenya. You can check the Uber website or app for other available rental options.

2. Leasing a Car
If you prefer leasing the car yourself ,look for car leasing companies in Kenya that offer vehicles specifically for rideshare purposes. Hertz Kenya and Avis Kenya offer leasing services for ride-share driving. It is important to ensure the lease terms are accommodating and compatible with Uber’s requirements before signing the agreement.

3. Third-Party Vehicle Providers
There are some companies that provide vehicles for Uber drivers on a hire-purchase basis or for short-term rental. Some of these firms include DriveMe Kenya, Zato Leasing and EasyCar Kenya which all offer  short-term or long-term rental services. Be mindful to check that the local providers have partnerships with Uber.

After receiving you car ,upload your Motor Vehicle Registration , PSV insurance and Vehicle Inspection Report on the app and ensure that they are a clear and readable copy. Ensure the details match the details on your Uber account including make and model of the car.
Remember to always upload the correct document to the field. Incorrect documents will not be accepted.

After completing the above steps, you are ready to activate your account and become a certified Uber driver in Kenya.
