The death of former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo robs the nation of an astute politician who was not afraid to speak his mind the repercussions notwithstanding. Midiwo is a cousin to ODM leader Raila Odinga and the two had an on and off relationship in matters concerning politics. Before his death, he had warned the former premier against attending funerals to avoid exposing himself to the dreaded Covid virus.
Hours after his sister’s death, Julia Opiyo, the man who came to be loved by Kenyans for his independent mind was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital. He had earlier lost two close relatives and burial arrangements were underway.
According to his elder brother George Midiwo, they suspect foul play as the MP was in good health:
“On Sunday evening, I spoke with his elder son who told me Jakoyo woke up well that day and was able to speak.
“The doctors had earlier informed us he was diagnosed with acute kidney failure, and they were trying to establish its cause….”

With that introduction, Jakoyo Midiwo was a loving father who educated his children and celebrated their achievements the best way he knew. He traveled to Nairobi from Siaya to celebrate his children’s academic achievements.
His daughter graduated from a South African university and this was the milestone Jakoyo was celebrating.

Jakoyo’s son had also scored a straight A (plain) in the KCSE exams. He sat is national exams at Nairobi School.
