Joe Wanjui: Billionaire Businessman And Former UoN Chancellor Dies Aged 87

Kenyan billionaire businessman Joe Wanjui has died.

Wanjui, who is also a former University of Nairobi (UoN) Chancellor died on Tuesday, July 2 at his home.

According to sources, he has been battling ill health for a long time.

Wanjui was 87.

Family and friends sent condolence messages online describing him as a visionary and humble man.

“My deepest condolences to the family and friends of former President Mwai Kibaki’s Advisor between 2003-2013 Dr. Joe Wanjui. During President Kibaki’s tenure in office Kenya government experienced the greatest economic boost that has never been achieved before through the good work ethic and counsel of his advisors led by Dr. Joe Wanjui,”

“My heartfelt sympathies go out to his son my closest family friend JB Wanjui and His wife Chamie Wanjui.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your extended family during this difficult time. May you find solace in the memories you shared and the legacy he leaves behind.” Wilson Ogweno a family friend shared.

Joe Wanjui was born on 24th May 1937 in Kiambu County.

He attended Kabaa Mission School and cleared from the famous Mang’u High School in Thika with a First Class in Cambridge School Certificate.

Wanjui was called to join Makerere University in Uganda to study for a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine.

He declined the offer and instead opted for the American Air Lift Scholarship to Ohio University same institution where his twin daughters later studied.

After clearing his degree, Wanjui would later become the first Kenyan to study a Master’s in industrial engineering and management after enrolling on a course at Columbia University in 1962.
