U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has picked Tim Walz as her running mate for the presidential election.

Walz is the Minnesota Governor and a former high school teacher.

He will become vice president if Harris beats Donald Trump in November.

The 60-year-old  accepted the offer on Tuesday morning, calling it the honour of a lifetime.

“Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school.” Walz said.

Harris’ campaign reportedly vetted about a dozen contenders, and her rumoured list was whittled to Walz and Shapiro in the hours leading up to the announcement.

According to Forbes, Walz is seen as an appealing option for independents and moderate Democrats as a working-class politician with a rural background.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday, July 21 announced he would not stand for re-election in 2024.

With less than four months before the November U.S. presidential election, Biden quit the race after weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats.

This comes after a disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump in June.

The announcement sent shock waves in the U.S. and globally.

In a statement on his official social media platforms, Biden endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris.

Biden also rallied support for Kamala and urged the Democratic Party to unite in supporting her to beat the Republican Party’s Donald Trump.

Harris in a statement on X, hailed the president for his extraordinary leadership and is honoured to have his endorsement.
