The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) medical team deployed in Gherille Forward Operating Base (FOB) have been celebrated for their humanity.
This is after they helped a woman in labour to deliver.
The woman, identified as Kaltuma Hassan Adon, who is in her mid-30s, accompanied by two women, arrived at the Gherille FOB’s Medical Aid Post in advanced labour for about 8 hours.
Kaltuma was received by the KDF medical team who went on and successfully assisted her to deliver a healthy baby boy.
The mother and the newborn baby were later transferred to Gherille Medical Facility for further postnatal care.
The KDF soldiers later visited Kaltuma’s family, where they delivered assorted foodstuffs.
This latest act of kindness by Gherille FOB comes just three weeks since a team from KDF on patrol came across another woman, who was also in labour.
The woman, Quresha Mungay from Gherille- Somalia sought delivery services prompting the military personnel to take her in before helping her deliver safely.
In April, KDF soldiers deployed in Burahache Forward Operating Base (FOB) conducted an impromptu medical outreach at El Banda Centre, Burahache, Somalia.
The soldiers were on routine patrol when residents led them to a sick woman within the area who was extremely weak from symptoms of severe dehydration, diarrhoea and vomiting.
According to KDF, the patrol medic sprung to action without hesitation and attended to the woman who needed urgent medical attention.
There are more than 4,000 Kenyan troops deployed in Somalia under the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) alongside troops from Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi and Djibouti.
