Located in the lakeside City of Kisumu’s central business district is an institution with a rich history that spans back to the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway. Kisumu Boys High School  performs well academically and has also served as a springboard for renowned Kenyan personalities in virtually every sector ranging from academia, business, politics and sports.

Brief History and relocation recommendations

After the curtains closed on the setting up of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1901, there was a biting need for education among the Indians who participated in this work. The colonial government was forced to construct a primary school in 1925 which transformed to Government Indian School in 1948. The institution initially admitted only Asian students.

At some point, the school enrolled both boys and girls. As such, it is not uncommon to hear of a lady proclaiming that her alma mater is Kisumu Boys. However, in 1961, Kisumu Girls was incepted and the two institutions built a mutual relationship in which they shared various facilities. For instance,  Kisumu Boy’s advanced labs were in Kisumu Girls while the later’s home science labs were in Kisumu Boys. After independence, Kisumu Boys High School started admitting native Africans alongside Asian students.

Lately, the school has hit headlines after Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o made a proposal that the institution sits on prime land and should be relocated. According to Nyong’o, the move will favor the expansion of the city in a bid to create an integrated city. The governor, whose sentiments attracted backlash from the school’s alumni indicated that there is a vast 105 acres piece of land in Kibos in which the institution, alongside their sister school can be relocated to.

Considering the value of the place, that land needs to be useful. We need to construct an integrated urban centre rather than schools,” said Nyong’o.
