The popular personality grew up at the heart of Kibera slums and has risen to become one of the most influential entertainers of our generation. Family

The celebrated DJ is married to Elsie Oliech. He is a proud father of two, a boy and a girl. Elsie is Dennis Oliech sister.

Background

The presenter was born and brought up in Kibera’s Bangkok area. Growing up, he was very good at football and his father wanted him to be a footballer. In fact, at one point he was the team manager for Harambee stars.

Despite his talent in football, music came calling. He loved listening to music and felt like reggae was a reflection of his life and the things he was going through.

Therefore, he pursued his dream and became a reggae DJ.

Career

Kris Darling had a popular show ‘UptownNights’ on HomeBoyz Radio and was also the host of a weekly JamRock reggae show on NTV.

In 2018, he decided to vie for the Kibra parliamentary seat that became vacant following the death of Ken Okoth.

The news of his departure from the station was confirmed by the head of production and programming, Justus Tharao. His statement read:

“ Kris has made his decision that he is getting into politics and as per the editorial policy, he left us with no choice but to terminate his contract as the host of the Jam Rock Reggae Show. This decision was mutual between both parties. We wish him well in his future endeavours. He will, however, host two more shows to bid the fans bye.”

When he made the decision to get into politics, he publicly knelt before ODM leader, Raila Odinga and pledged his loyalty to him. Part of the words he spoke were:

“Let them shoot me, if it means that you remain and lead in 2022… I ask that you hold my hand…”  he told The Star)

Of course, he was trolled for a while after this and was the butt of online jokes. Later, he lost the nominations but took it in good faith and went on with his career as an entertainer.

Philanthropy

The entertainer has found a way to give back to the society. He is the founder of Darling foundation, whose focus is to mentor the youths.

Ten percent of what he makes doing shows goes to getting sanitary towels and boxers for young girls and boys in Kibera.

How much he charges per show

Kriss Darlin is coy with details of his pay for shows. Asked by a local media house how much he charges, he responded: “I don’t disclose that, it’s between the client and I.”
