CNN journalist Larry Madowo has shared how Kenyan police officers deployed in Haiti saved his life and others during an attack.
Madowo shared exclusive footage of the police officers engaging in battle with a gang.
The gang targeted Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille as he left the General Hospital, also known as the Hospital of the State University of Haiti.
The PM had walked into the hospital with the CNN crew led by Madowo.
He was also accompanied by Haitian National Police (HNP) Director General Normil Rameau and the General Commander of The Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) Godfrey Otunge.
During the interview with Madowo, several shots were fired forcing the police officers to intervene and evacuate the PM.
“My CNN team faced gunfire twice on the same day from gangs but Kenyan police kept us safe until we left the country. They’re mostly GSU and AP Border Police Unit officers.”
“We got the world’s first inside look at a US-funded mission led by Kenyan police to bring peace to Port-au-Prince. Police who’ve fought Al-Shabaab tell me Haitian gangs are easy to beat.” Madowo said.
Recently, Madowo was hit by a fragment of a tear gas canister while reporting on Nane Nane protests in Nairobi CBD.
Madowo was reporting on the scene when the fragment of tear gas canister hit him near his face; luckily, the journalist was wearing a helmet.
The journalist confronted the police officers and accused them of aiming the canister at him.
