Dr. Lukoye Atwoli is a prominent psychiatrist and academic, currently serving as the Dean of the Medical College East Africa at Aga Khan University.

He holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town and has significant expertise in mental health policy and trauma research.

Atwoli is also the Chairperson of the Board at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital and actively participates in various national health initiatives.

Additionally, he writes a weekly column addressing social issues in Kenya and has contributed to numerous mental health policies.

Education

Atwoli has an extensive educational background in medicine and psychiatry.

He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from Moi University in Kenya, completing his studies between 1995 and 2001.

Following his undergraduate education, Atwoli pursued a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Psychiatry at the University of Nairobi from 2003 to 2006.

Atwoli further advanced his academic credentials by obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychiatry from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where he studied from 2012 to 2015.

His doctoral research centered on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), exploring its prevalence and impact, particularly among individuals affected by conflict or disaster situations.

In addition to these degrees, Atwoli has pursued specialized training opportunities, including a certificate in Disaster Mental Health from the Hyogo Institute in Japan.

Election into National Academy of Medicine
