In July 2020, law scholar and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s spokesperson Makau Mutua opened a high-end hotel in his hometown of Mituni, Kitui County.
Dubbed the Kitui Villas, the 10-bed capacity hotel which was originally a five-bedroom house was officially opened by Raila.
The grand opening was also graced by Makau’s friends in the political class including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, Wavinya Ndeti among others.
The villas was constructed in 2014. The original plans were drawn by activist Davinder Lamber.
Makau’s late brother Musyoka was the main contractor, his other brother Pius the accountant while the other kin Clement and Michael played one or another role.

The hotel is complete with conference facilities, a bar, a heated swimming pool, wifi, hot showers, conference facilities and boasts of satellite TVs.
It also features a library, an air-conditioned setting, a modern gym, and a children’s pool connected with the adult’s pool.
A guest can spend a night, or enjoy a drink by the pool at the edge of the open-plan bar.
The villa also has portraits of revolutionaries, human rights defenders and freedom lovers of a bygone era staring down on the visitors.
Rooms at the hotel are named after freedom heroes including Nelson Mandela, Me Katilili wa Menza, Dedan Kimathi, Patrice Lumumba and Mahatma Gandhi.
Others are Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jnr, Julius Nyerere, Syokimau and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
The facility is run by a close friend of Mutua, ex-Kenya Human Rights Commission staffer Vincent Musebe Akala.
