President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother and former First lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been receiving Sh568, 218 monthly pay since 2013, reports businessdaily.com. The pay is on account of Ngina being the spouse of Kenya founding president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta who died in 1978.
This revelation has sparked heated debate on social media platforms. Treasury has however justified the pay saying the law provides for a spouse of a sitting or retired president to be paid 40 percent of the current salary paid to the sitting head of state should their husband die.
The Presidential Retirement Benefits Act states:
“Spouse benefits upon the death of a serving President or of a retired President who is in receipt of or who is entitled to a pension under this Act, his surviving spouse shall be entitled to benefits amounting to fifty percent of such pension”

Retired Presidents pocket 80 percent of current salary of the sitting Head of State-which translates to kes1.15 million per month- and also enjoy such perks as fuel, house and entertainment allowances.
