Martin Safari is a barber from Rwanda who has gained significant popularity online for his unique approach to haircuts, utilizing unconventional tools.

Unlike traditional barbers who rely on standard equipment such as clippers and shavers, he uses an array of items including hammers, knives, chisels, shovels, and even an iron box.

Although Safari always envisioned himself as an artist, he initially pursued a degree in the sciences under his parents’ influence, which led him to set aside his artistic aspirations.

This changed during his time at a boarding school in Uganda when a friend, unable to afford a haircut outside of school, asked for his assistance in trimming his hair.

From that moment, cutting hair became a newfound passion for him, evolving from a mere hobby to a sought-after service among his peers.

“I had even stopped asking for pocket money from my parents. So when I went back home for the holidays, I decided to take it to another level. I subscribed to some of the biggest barbers’ YouTube channels and took some online courses,” he said.

Safari’s skills advanced significantly, to the point where his talent was widely recognized, leading the school to officially employ him as the barber for students.

“I think my talent didn’t fully disappear. People tell me that they see my art just by looking at how I present my content and the way I make a haircut. This gives me satisfaction,” he said.

To obtain an appointment with Safari, individuals must contact him through his Instagram account, Safro Fades, where he showcases his distinctive work.

He disclosed that the price for a haircut ranges from Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 8,000.

Following each grooming session, his clients leave looking polished and well-groomed, with no hair out of alignment.

The Kigali University alumnus noted that his achievements have been significantly enhanced by the advantages of the digital age.

He attributes his success to his dedication and innovative approach.

“I can imagine that if this was a decade ago, I would just be some other barber. But because of technology and social media platforms, through proper content creation, I’m able to reach my desired audience, willing to pay adequately for my services,” he shared.

Safari acknowledged that his profession presents unique challenges, the most significant of which is the skepticism surrounding his capability to perform effectively.

Frequently, clients become apprehensive when they observe his instruments of work, which they perceive as rudimentary weapons.

“The major challenge I face is getting people to trust me due to the crazy tools I use. I’m still new in Nairobi and people don’t know me yet. It is therefore difficult to convince a person,” he said.

Safari has received numerous international accolades, including the distinction of being recognized as the best content creator at the Barber Grammy Awards in 2023.

Additionally, he was picked to serve as a judge at a barbering competition held in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
